It can take up to 30 hours for a healthy quail chick to make from pip to hatch. Exiting the egg helps stimulate their metabolism and also qualifies as their first encounter with darwin. If they cant make it out on their own, they usually arent fit to.

I completely agree with you. And think nature is the best course. But I've got myself in a bind with some very expensive shipped eggs that have been sitting on my counter for two days waiting on this egg. I need the incubator! I hate to say that but I just need confirmation that he's still going and I'm not waiting for nothing!

He's alive. I turned the shower on hot and carried the incubator in there. Took him out and I could hear him and feel him moving. So I didn't even have to touch the pip. He must not be ready yet. If I have the brooder stable at 99.5 degrees, can I take him out of the incubator right after he hatches and put him in there???

Well it's been 21 hours and I'm still waiting. Absolutely no progress and I really need to set my other eggs. I'm going to make a pip "hole" and try to locate the beak. Anyone done an assist on quail?

Thank you! I had just watched that exact video before you posted it! I was able to get his beak out but I saw one red vein, so I stopped. That was almost two hours ago, so I'm going to check on him again. Do you think he can hatch on his own now or will he need more help?

I think he could possibly get out on his own. Great job helping him out!
Just make sure he doesn't get shrink wrapped by keeping the humidity up.

Here's the update:
He started trying to zip but I could see the inner membrane was drying out and getting stuck to him. I think this happens more with forced air incubators, like I have. So I took him out just to peel away the drying membrane and he started struggling his hardest to get out of that egg. I peeled a little membrane and he pushed a wing out and was busting out of the shell. I tried just getting the cap of the egg off and he just pushed right out! So I put him back in the incubator and went to bed. Hoping he'd rest and dry up and make it to morning. Before I even got out of bed this morning I could hear chirping. His feet were curled. Is this common with quail? I was wondering if they would straighten out on their own around the 24 hour mark like some species do. But just to be safe, I made little booties for him! He's doing good! Any input on the curled feet??
