Almost Complete! Building 12x20 coop! Update post # 41

I admire your fortitude.

Rolled roofing is about $30 per 100 square feet. I suggest going mobile because you go anywhere you want. If a "landlord" pisses me off, I'm gone.

Well this afternoon I started on my 12x20 Pole Barn coop and we set the 6 support posts and that is the hardest thing to square everything up. I will try to post pictures tomorrow.

So the plan is

1st Frame the walls
2nd Build the Entry door
3rd Install the 2 or 3 windows
4th Install the Plywood to the sides.
5th Frame the roof
6th Install the 7/16 OSB on roof
7th Install Rolled Roofing
and last but not least 8th Paint the coop! My wife wants it Barn Red.

After the coop is done I will build nest boxes and I should have enough materials left over to build the roosts.

I personally agree with Nate on the mobile coop because you rent. I just moved - my landlady died unexpectedly and we were made to move - and I lost one of my small coops because I couldn't get anyone to move it. I now have 42 chickens in a very small space - just over 2sq ft per bird - and I really wish I had made my coop on wheels. I have bloody, featherless pullets, two cockerels who tried to kill each other and many other issues due to space issues.

Well here is the reason I am not concerned with the landlord part. We are living on my father in laws property and we haven't ever had any problems. I am building this coop and everything can be taken apart and salvaged except the rolled roofing and maybe the corner posts. If something happens my wife and I could disassemble it in a matter of a 3-4 hours. If we do move he will probably want to buy the building anyway to use for a shed or a shop. He is a Mr. Fix-it Kinda guy and we are also planning on living here for 3-4 years because the rent is fairly cheap for the house and the land. Thanks

I have this set up. I would suggest plywood or something under the metal roofing. Lots of condensation and dripping.

I decided not to use the corrugated metal roofing because it would have been about $300+ just for the metal. I an using 7/16 Osb Plywood with Rolled roofing over it. Hopefully everything goes well!

I built these all metal coops for about $450 for the small one & $750 for the larger in materials. They sell for more.My girls,& couple roos, sleep at night & I dont worry.Nothing but a bear is getting in.You can also slide them up on a standard car trailer.I have 30 chickens in my 6x9 with plenty of room for more.If they are let out during the day,you just dont need a huge coop.Metal cleans with a spray hose too.If it gets too cold, cover the screens with a canvas tarp. One is mine and one was for a customer. You see him standin there with a smile!

A 6x9 coop is 54 sq ft and with 30 chickens that is 1.8 sq ft per bird. Metal is not good for my area due to the 100 + degree heat in the summer and the teens or lower in the winter. The metal would cook the birds here. I am building my 12x20 coop for about $725 for everything from Lumber to rolled roofing and I am going to bury welded wire around the edges. I haven't ever had a real problem with the wood sides and they do not absorb the heat like metal does. Metal is expensive here right now and I prefer working with wood. I am on a budget and this coop will have 240 sq feet and can accommodate 80 hens at 3 sq ft per bird and 60 at 4 sq ft. I will free range them from about 14 weeks and up. To cut the feed cost down. I will probably have about 40-50 Rsl Hens this year and probably more 10-15 more RSL next year.

Here are the First of many pictures. We did the Poles Friday and the 2x4's this morning. The Pumpkins are for my Pigs and Chickens. My pigs really like the mushy ones. My chickens really like them also!
