We are on day 14 of our Ancona incubation. We ended up discarding an egg last night after determining that it had a blood ring. Since this is our first time incubating eggs, we wanted to open it up and confirm what we saw when candling.

When we went to crack the egg open, it was very hard to crack. I've never opened up a duck egg before, so I don't know if that's normal. Once we finally got it open, the membrane was extremely tough and we had difficulty in breaking through that as well. Once we had it open, there was indeed a blood ring.

Is the hard shell and membrane typical of duck eggs in general or of partially incubated eggs? Or is this a sign that there's something wrong with my incubation? The rest of my eggs appear to be developing normally. Air cells seem to be on par with what you'd expect. I'm keeping the humidity at about 50-55%.
