American serama thread!

Yesterday 24 and at least 1 so far today! Some silkied, some frizzled and some smooth pairings from my best breeders. All look healthy and a wide variety of colors, that's for sure! Love the box of chocolate thing with this breed!!

Do we get pix?

I have fallen for this breed and yes the colors are amazing to watch. How long will two little roosters get along? I don't want to let either go until I know what they will turn out to be. Is there any place where you can see pictures of the differant colors?

Let them hatch!
I can see why this is so addicting!

Anyone have lots of these in the city? I'm wondering how if I can keep a few boys together with a flock of serama and have everyone get along. We just finished our big new chicken run and I want to know if I can give them all free run of it or if I' have to separate them. I feel like they would just be more happy with the whole run to play with rather than be sectioned off ya know?

Mine hatched last night. I only got two, but they seem healthy and active! With chickens, it seems that they can all get along as long as there is a good hen to roo ratio. Some say as many as 10 hens to a roo? I think you could get a way with fewer, but don't really have experience

If the boys are hatch mates, it might be easier, as long as there are a good number of hens around??

Here are my little ones drying off in the incubator:

They spent the night in there. Now they're in a cardboard box "brooder" as they don't need more than that. I'll put them in a cage when they get bigger :) I'm hoping one will turn out to be a frizzle. They're both from Bhep

BTW, they were 2 days early

awww cluck-cluck they are cute! I am just hoping for some pullets and not a load of roo's. Several of us on the East TN thread are getting early hatchers.

@ Fuzzy -- I had 2 roo's in my pen for almost a month and they were adults and not clutch mates. I bought some "hens" and wound up with a roo in the bunch. They were introduced and the hens were more snipey than they boys. As long as they didn't try to hop the same hen, they got along fine for weeks. Then I traded him back for eggs. So, if they are clutch mates...they may just be fine together if there is room to move away from each other as they get older. And plenty of ladies won't hurt. I also have a Silkie roo that is only about 12 weeks old in there for winter and they still snuggle together. Granted every roo is different, but so far, mine are doing fine.

Would love to but I'm sick in bed today and have been the last few days. Poor hubby has had to take care of them and honestly, he might drop dead from exhaustion if I ask him to take photos as well! He has had to take care of all the chicks inside and all the breeders and show birds as well these last few days.

A few pages back, people were asking about providing water for chicks. Here's how I do it. Cut the top of a big shampoo bottle, and cut a small hole i the bottom on the side. Thread a soda bottle waterer into the hole, flip the unit upside down, and fir it with a full bottle of water. It sits on the floor without falling over, no marbles needed, everybody has easy acess, and it's easy to clean the shavings out of it with a couple of sloshy flips onto the floor.

Here's who's using it right now; a wheaten, a black, some whites, and some mottled-type pullets that are too white already.
Cute babies!
Very neat idea!
Mine start with a hamster water bottle then move up to a rabbit water bottle. The largest rabbit water bottle I have is a half gallon.

The tiny chicks do great with the hamster water bottle. I poked a hole in the side of a tin container that had these delicious cookies in them (I know, sacrifice sacrifice) I put some heavy rocks in the bottom so it would be stable if a larger chick jumped against it. Then I stuffed plastic grocery bags in an seated the bottle in it with the tip through the hole. I have one that I put 3 holes at different heights so I can use it for the tiniest then move it up to the taller holes as they grow. I's very clean water, the whole thing gets dusty but a quick rinse works fine. They find it in seconds even as day old chicks. There is sometimes a small drop that will dangle at the tip and the chicks go wild for it.

I change the water daily, even if they don't drink it all but as they get older, they drink more and can finish off the bottle in a day and it's so funny to hear them popping that metal ball in the tip like "hey get in here and fill this thing!" The rabbit water bottles have a much heavier ball in the tip so the tiny ones need this smaller size to be able to bump the ball for a drink.

Love these waterer ideas. You guys are great, I was just setting up a new brooder for my call ducklings and japanese bantams that should be hatching anyday, and was trying to figure out how to hang a water bottle in there. Now I've got some ideas.
Can anyone tell me what Color Twinkle may be. Look closely and you can see some reddish feathers on the back. Do Seramas change color as they grow? When can you tell what color will they be when grown?

He looks a lot like my favorite little boy, who is about 3 months old now. The pic is from about a month ago, a few weeks after the red/orange started showing up.

Thank you Lunar! Here is my other little roo Toy. All my serama chicks are from crazypetlady. I am so proud of them!

Oh dear! I'm so sorry you're ill! I hope you will get better really soon and that your husband doesn't catch any of it! I've been wanting to get a flu shot, but never got around to it, now I feel so vulnerable! Really don't want to get sick this year

And really wish you a quick recovery!
