I think I'm about to fall in love with Seramas

. What beautiful little birds. Would it be possible to start keeping just a pair of them, a rooster and a hen in a little coop of their own? Or would that lead to over-mating and stress for the hen and frustration for the roo?

I have several roosters and often use them in pairs with the hens. There's never been a problem with over-mating.

I hatched some in the incubator a little over 3 weeks ago, and my broody also hatched some at the same time. She's out in the baby coop with 6, and I kept some inside. One being a tiny one that I thought was going to fail to thrive. Well, it's still hanging in there, eating, drinking, pooping...seems mostly fine... But she's not growing at all! Feathering very slowly. She is silkied, in my brooder with another silkied Serama, a lone booted Serama and a lone bantam cochin. The other 3 tower over her now.

Has anyone ever had one fail to thrive this long and end up fine??

Over the last four decades I have has various chicks/ducklings/goslings etc. fail to thrive. Most died within a short time after hatching. At three weeks of age I'd suspect something else may be going on. During the last two years I have had three serama chicks stop growing; all three were very small chicks. On examination their abdomens were swollen and discolored which is an indication of intestinal infection. With the use of antibiotics two of the three improved quickly while the third chick died.

With your chick, size is does not necessarily mean there's a problem as it is not unusual to get very small chicks that grow into very small adults. However, the plumage shows that the chick is not developing as it should. Good luck.

Thanks. I have given her some straigh NutriDrench, but otherwise she is just hanging out with the others. I agree the plumage is not developing. I guess I'll just wait her out and see what happens, and consider some antibiotics.

Her abdomen seems fine, her crop is firm at night, and empty in the mornings. Her poops are tiny, but she does poop regularly, and normally.

The one other odd thing I noticed...ya know how they act when they are about to poop? Breathe, and lift the tail and kinda squat? She does that alot, but doesn't always poop. She also seems to breathe heavy, but maybe its more noticeable because of her size.

Any and all ideas are welcome.

I just purchased him from a breeder who was willing to let him go because of size (19.1 oz). He was the only C out of his hatch, the rest looked to be A and B. I do hope to breed him to my serama hen (16oz) and OEB (14 oz), . I have never shown before though and since my eye for judging traits is still developing I would really love to hear your opinions of his strengths and vaults. I should note though that he has had no training at all so his pose is natural and could probably be improved a bit with some work.[/COLOR]

Give him a chance to mature....you might be surprised how he turns out! It's amazing some times how much they change...I've had some pretty lanky scraggly looking cockrels that didn't seem to be heading anywhere but the freezer...and a couple of months later, you would never have believed they were the same birds...good luck!!! And most of all Enjoy!!!

Are these pure seramas? I think they are leghorn mixes as they had exchequer leghorns and oegb as well and what are the sexes all are the same age...i think theres two roos and a hen

I'm no expert, but they look pure to me. 1 cockerel, 2 pullets. That's my guess.

I can't answer as to "pure", but the red is a rooster/cockerel and the other two are hens/pullets.

These birds are not "pure" serama. The Daddies tail feathers are not correct, and he has white earlobes (which in the so called pure lines is gone.) The kids are just so-so. NOW are they friendly? Do you just want them for funnzies? then who cares, BUT if you are looking for show quality or to breed and sell, get better quality to start with.

True seramas are a product of many different types of birds that were crossed together to get a very upright vertical stance and the temperament that makes a serama a serama.
