I am new to the chicken world but I think this is a very good explanation. Thanks for posting this.

Why would you resent it? Just curious. I thought it was very reasonable.

I think he is been too selfish... but that's just me and its my own point of view.. you can resent it also(my point of view) its cool with me...

Understandable. But he's really not being selfish. It isn't his duty to populate all of our yards with his special birds. And he said very clearly that it isn't impossible to get birds from him, you just have to prove that you deserve them, first!

Personally, I like that challenge, and as someone who has started with substandard animals in a lot of different species and graduated to top level animals as I went along, I can tell you I would not have known what to do with good quality animals if I had not experienced the poor ones, first. It drives me crazy to see people ruin good stock within a generation or two simply because they haven't worked with the breed long enough to have a clue. That's a travesty with a rare breed where quality stock is few and far between, and I respect Saladin very much for being a good custodian of his breed.

I don't get why it would be better to kill the 200+ birds a year and then at the same time effectively say "you should start with hatchery stock because my birds are too good for the likes of you".

If there is a market for your culls, why worry about keeping them from the undeserving masses.

BEWARE OPINION BELOW.

I think if you have something good why not share it. Just because someone didnt start from humble beginnings (from hatchery stock) doesnt mean they are any less deserving.
If you want breeders for next year you should have extra pens. Why sell birds that you want back later. They could possibly come into health problems (maybe a respiratory illness)down the line somewhere. Even the best breeders come to terms with having a bird or 2 that get something. Would you still want them back? I certaintly hope not. On the other hand is predators. If I were you I would keep any breeder birds you want in a seperate pen. Not sell them to who knows who with who knows what.

Hmm you may seem to know what your doing with the breed but in my opinion you may have issues in the biosecurity department. Just sayin.

ETA: I agree with the post that said something to the effect that a bird that may be a cull to one can improve another. (One mans junk is another mans treasure. Same concept.)

I didn't mean for this to turn into a saladin character reference. lol.

I'll give 2 more examples:

I searched for over 20 years for a Ga Cua (Vietnamese Gamefowl). I worked for years in Cambodia teaching farming skills, but those contacts were no good to me in the USA. Vietnamese Americans hold their fowl very tightly. Finally, a friend in CA that had also been search for years found some. After he bred them for a few years I rec'd a Pullet. She laid 17 eggs this year of which 5 hatched (crossed to Asil). I now have to breed the best cockerels back to her next year. She'll probably lay another 17 eggs for me.

Let's see at this rate, I should have something approaching a 99% Ga Cua in about 5 years or so. Then, they'll be very inbred at that. Now, please explain to me how I'm suppose to open the floodgates on Ga Cua stock for folks? Sure, I intend to spread them around, but I'll know every person that gets some I can promise you that.

My Malgache lay 20 eggs in the Spring and 20 eggs in the Fall. I don't hatch them in the Fall because I can't get the chicks thru the winter. Of the 20 laid hopefully I'll get 50% to hatch: then there is the culling. I've kept 3 hens and 1 cock. At last count I had 7 chicks on the ground that have made it thus far. Hard to cull much with those kind of numbers. I'd love to be able to gift or sell a trio, BUT THEY JUST AIN'T THERE!

I do the best I can by the chickens FIRST; then, I worry about other breeders.

Ask Cubalaya: he waited two years for some Black Cubalayas. Ask Cubakid, he's still waiting (hopefully this fall brother). Patience is a virtue.

I waited for 4 years to get my Malgache from a breeder. I waited even longer for the Ga Cua.
