animal control came and said to get rid of my chickens!

A lot of the time Animal Control gets a little too big for their britches. I would point blank ask them to show you what law or ordinance you are breaking. If you don't comply they typically will issue you a summons to appear in court where you will get to explain to the judge your side of things. I would also take in your most personable and friendly chicken as "evidence".

The burden of proof is on them and if they cannot SHOW you what ordinance you are breaking then you are ok. Also if the city or council changes the ordinance you are grandfathered in as long as you always keep at least one chicken on your property.

Keep us informed.

KareyABohr, there is an ordanance in this animal control booklet the city has, albeit dumb. I'm just trying to get the council to give me a variance or exception, because my chickens are not Livestock or Agricultural, just pets, with names and everything. I was also told to bring in one of my girls, I may just do that too. I will keep you posted though.

Do you have a silky to take? Or maybe you can borrow one - I don't see how anyone could argue with a straight face that a Silky is livestock....

Ya know what keeps people out of my yard?? Even animal control, the gas company, water, and electric? Oh and a sign that says beware of owner and dogs!

Seriously i cannot stand neighbors. One of ours called the county on us for moving a new motorhome onto the land. Almost cost us like $4000 in court to fight.

Anywho, I'm sorry to hear about this happening to you. Animal control is the reason all those poor cats and dogs are in the pounds. HATE animal control!!!!!

I would have told him to go ahead and go in there and get em himself. And laughed my butt off when my roo attacked him. (I know you dont have a roo but it would be funny).

Keep us updated on this.

Love your dogs! I have 2 myself, a harlequin and a black one, females, they are both 8 y/o now. I know, the meter reader for the electric company has to make an appointment to read said meter. Not that the dogs would hurt him, at least I don't think they would. You never know, females are very protective, and their bark is something to be scared of!
I will certainly keep you guys all posted. I want my babies. As we all know, they bother no one.

awwwww!!!!!!!!!!! harlequins are my favorite, i will be getting one in a year or so, when my son gets older. I lost my fawn great dane, she got hung up by her collar. I had her from a pup. So sad. No one would come in the yard with her bark. But they both love up to anyone when i tell them they are ok. I wanna see pics. I grew up with danes. I rode them like horsies when i was 4 or 5.

I'm sorry to hear about your fawn. Because they are so big, most people are scared to death of them. Their bark can be spine tingling, if you know what I mean. My black Dane Abbie, I've had since she was 3 months old and 40 pounds, and my harlequine, Patches, I got her when she was 15 months old. The man who had her could no longer afford her, so I bought her from him. I know, Danes are the greatest. Even when my daughter and I go for walks at night, you should hear the comments. I know, what is that, a horse?

Well, you did say you "rode" them like horses

They always tell me how beautiful they are too. That always makes you proud, huh? Now, THATS A DOG!!

Why don't you try giving them some eggs? I live in a development on the corner. I asked the neighbors on either side of me if they minded if I got hens. They LOVE them. I DO give them eggs every so often, though. Maybe if you kill them with kindness, they'll change their mind.

Just a thought!
