animal control came and said to get rid of my chickens!

do you have any suggestions about how to word this said petition. Hubby said to have my 2 youngest girls stand out in front of the grocery store and ask people to sign it. I think its a good idea, one is 10 and the other is 12.

Bless your heart

You also might try asking your next door neighbor (who you think complained), as to what the problem is. Maybe you can improve your chicken-keeping to prevent that issue annoying him.

I think my chickens are a little noisy, but no noisier than the crows around here, and certainly quieter than neighbors' kids playing. My chickens are also maybe a little stinky occasionally, but no stinkier than another neighbor idling and tuning up a power boat motor and a snowmobile motor. (phew)

vermontgal, thats right! We also have the crows and black birds all over the place right now, yeah, they are noisy, but I like hearing them. Chickens can get stinky okay, but like you say, there is much more stinky things out there. You know, I think who ever complained, just did so because they could. the ACO didn't say anything about noise, smell, etc. so which leads me to believe they probably said, hey, they have chickens and chickens aren't aloud here! I can't understand most people.

thats so funny, 13 cats!! I like that, your zoo! Thats what it is too! Hey, you live NW of chicago? The city of Chicago allows chickens, wonder why your city doesn't??

Makes no sense, huh? How did you keep a rooster? I had one for a short time, but rehomed him because I DIDN'T want to be "found out". Lotta good that did me. My babies live behind a wooden fence, and you can't see them unless you walk into my yard and peek in. I told my hubby that it must have been the Goodyear Blimp going over our house, and they saw them, and told animal control.

Or maybe one of the planes going over, because we have small airport and theres a flying school there. I guess the run-way is directly over where our house is located, right in its path. I'm only grasping at straws here. It doesn't matter really, it only matters that they found out about them. But you know, the Blimp could see, right, they don't fly fast, so maybe. I'll keep you posted on my progress. Like I said, I'm not given them up, they bother no one, and they ARE my pets, just like the rest of my ZOO!

Roaster lived in our spare bathroom at night. He was a small bantee mix my DH found abandoned at 1 day old at my FIL's house. Roosted on the frame of the shower door and pooped in the tub...easy clean. for most of the day he had the run of the house. He would poop in my cats litter boxes but still had his dollops that he trained me to clean. I would be out with him during free range time. We spent hours together gardening.
When he got loud, I would yell "Roaster" and he would actually sass me, then come to me. My neighbors loved him, but had to bring him in many times on nice days.
He would do his cock a doodle whenever strangers walked past.
Best protector I ever had. Would even have a fit if there was a strange voice on the answering machine.
Yes, I'm rambling on...sorry.
My girls have been in the large pen my husband built for me in our basement. They will be in the outdoor coop next week when it is finished.
I may get busted too.
Yes it is unreal that the city of Chicago allows chickens.
My husband had a beautiful antique tractor in our driveway that he rebuilt. Got a warning notice that no agricultural vehicles were allowed per ordinance. It was OK once he put a backhoe on it to consider it landscaping equipment......
We have a farm we will be moving to in about a year. I can't wait!

I love that picture!!!! I just can't believe city ordanances. Who cares about the tractor. I would love to see one of those around here. Like I've been saying, this Tuesday, the 17th, were going to go to our city meeting and see if I can get the commissioners to consider us having my girls. Sometimes these people can be so closed-minded, they make me sick. I've got several print outs of different newspaper articles from all over that I will leave with them to read at their convienence. I hope that it all works out. If I can just get them to consider it, and read up some about them in the backyard, I think they would see the light, don't you?

I don't blame you one bit, country here I come, right?

I've read a couple of threads where people have joined 4h as a sponsor and got around the city ordinances. Might be worth checking into. I think some places have provisions for 4h clubs and the like . Good luck!! I hate somebody telling me what I can do and what I can't do. Especially somehwhere where I pay the bills !! And the TAXES!!
