Any Hawaii Folks on BYC?

Aloha!! Kinda late to this game, but I'm from Moanalua area as well!!

I have (shhhhh!!) 2 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 2 Leghorns, and 5 ISA's from Asagi... I just got 2 more from a friend who was trying to downsize..... But, turns out I don't want them anymore... How does one go about getting rid of chickens?

Aloha,

RnsMomma, You should put them on Craigslist.

SuperK, Iʻm not sure on what is too old. I think they start slowing down after 3 years and are pau at 5. It also varies from breed to breed.

Look into tractors for your meat birds, since youʻll have a lot of land on the B.I.

Aloha, Puhi

Thanks, I do like the idea of moving them spot to spot.
For the laying hens, we are planning on building them an uptown Island town house. Two story with upper loft being the roost and laying boxes for 10, Auto door that exits out to a balcony and double wide ramp that takes them down to the grass below. I'll have to come up with a transition gateway from the pen to the tractor though it should be an easy design.
For the meat birds, pretty much the same though the laying boxes are nixed for the extra roost space for 25.

Packing for the long awaited move is started. Wow, it's really starting to move fast now- not sure if well be packed up and ready for the movers on the 28th of November. Our last day in California will be Nov 29. Looks like Christmas in Paradise. 8^ ).

Oh boy out in the boonies :D Lotsa room for chickies there and likely no neighbours complaining about them crowing at all hours either like sometimes they do in town... though having said that, there are feral chickens all over town, I see them on the way to work every morning

The rainfall outlook for this wet season is here (cross finger it lets me post link):

what will most interest you:
Water supply: Catchment systems will run low.

Link came through fine and functioned properly. Thank you! LOL, Boonies! We are looking for 3 acres for rabbits, chickens, pigs, goats and mini moos too. We plan on a sizable garden to eat well, and enjoy our retirement years. Looking forward to it! Is there ever a meet up for the BYC group from the Big Island?

hmm i've no idea tbh. i've not been on here all that long. and sounds like you have loads of plans for a lovely farm. just a major word of advice: cut down any albizia trees near structures or power lines (or anything that you'd rather not have smashed). When Iselle hit Puna side last year, hooo plenty of the trees got smashed like chopsticks. here's a vid from last year on local news to give you an idea. http://www.kitv.com/news/hawaii/albizia-trees-are-a-growing-problem-in-hawaii/24612438

I think frankly they are the single biggest problem when there's a storm. though we have loads of other issues too. Hawaiian acres musta gotta have plenty coques! you'll need your chickens to keep them under control lolol!
