Any Home Bakers Here?

I got my starter Ron, thank you!! I just mixed it up. Is it ok if I just used a wide mouth quart jar covered with a paper towel and a jar ring?
I made mine up in one of those 40 oz Costco nut "cubes". I lay the lid on top while it is "eating", screw it down when I put it in the refrigerator.

I found flour available online. The catch is that the only units that were available were 50 lb. bags by the pallet of 50 bags. They should advertise those as the hoarder's special.
That is amazing!

Flour should be back in stores here soon. As the virus spreads, hoarding seems to start first. After there are a lot of cases, people seem to stop being as silly

Is it normal for the water to settle on top?

That is alcohol AKA hootch. Pour it off or mix it in. Either is okay. Just add a little less water next time. As one that doesn’t measure the flour and water, I get it fairly often.

I usually check the starter....it is like making BREAD. You watch the water
and the flour. If you want it thicker....add more flour less water. You will
know soon. I do not get the liquid on top. And if you are not using the
starter often...keep in refrigerator. When you are going to bake...remove
and start feeding..then bake. It is a good idea to feed AT LEAST ONCE A
WEEK...when in the refrigerator. Your schedule is made according to your
baking schedule. YOU ARE IN CHARGE> work out your schedule.

It may seem a lot of work and not easy at first. Once you get your
schedule going...it is a breeze. ..and the Sourdough Bread is the BEST.
