Anybody having hard time selling chicks?

Excellent! I wish I had thought to contact you earlier (you know, like before I ordered my chicks).

Yea, no big deal, I mean you'll get you chicks/chickens either way!

Well I just sold two ( extra)laying pullets for $25 ea here in CA.( I need to downsize-got an incubator) But that was the only person who responded to my CL ad. I know that is the going rate for laying pullets around here. Feed stores get about $5 per chick here and some others on CL are selling chicks for $6 ea non sexed. It is harder to find certain breeds here though besides the standard RIR, BR, Orps, EE's etc.
I do feel like they are worth it since they are healthy, socialized, fed Organic layers feed, with treats like BOSS/ wheat berries etc etc..a lot goes into really nice birds. Monthly DE dustings etc.. I personally would rather get larger birds this way. But for small chicks I would want the more sought after breeds...

Location is everything, I am in SE Ohio and I have seen flocks of 20 laying hens in their second lay for $20, for the whole flock. I am taking a Raising Pullets project for 4-H this year, I ordered 50 pullet chicks, golden comets, BR's, and EE's. I am hoping to sell them for $7 at 4 months of age, but I am not sure if that will be possible. I raise fancies, and I was lucky to get $5 each for open-show quality 8-week old Sebrights.

I would buy pullets that started but can't find them near me. The hens I found were burned out. But my eggs aren't even selling like last year. I put an add in Craigs looking for 20 young pullets, didn't get one call. I wanted some EE

I sold most of my older golden comet girls (1 1/2 years old and still laying strong!) last week for $5 each. Considering I got them for free, that was pretty good. I have probably fed each one of them $5 worth of feed though since I've had them and trying to get them healthy again.

I bought 60 chicks (15 each of barred rock, RIR, NHR, and Silver Laced Wynadotte) for $0.75 each a couple days ago. I'm going to wait until I can tell them apart and sell them as started pullets. The extra roos will probably go into our freezer.

I don't really try to make a profit with my chickens and chick sales, I just try to make enough to support my chicken and duck habit! It's cheaper and more fufilling to be hooked on chickens and ducks than drugs!

PS - There is someone near Raleigh, NC that wants silkie chicks this year! Let me know if you have any, and I'll send your info to her.

Could it be the weather? Seems like winter just won't go away this year and getting chicks is something people think about doing in the spring. It doesn't feel or look like spring.
