You have to be pretty low income to qualify for grants. School loans are a rip off usually. 7.5% interest. They tried to pass a bill that would allow the govt to loan the money directly to students. I think it got a resounding NO from the party of NO. It eliminated the middle man enabling people to get loans at a lower interest rate. Good for the people, not good for the middleman. They like that 6.5% interest that they get for no risk at all. They get the money from Uncle Sam at 1% then loan it at 7.5% and it is fully guaranteed by Uncle Sam. Don't want to take that free money at our expense from the money changers.

So it's not welfare. Believe it or not your income taxes go to pay for a lot of social safety nets. They are there for you to use if you absolutely need them. Not just people that don't deserve the benefits.

People that take an opportunity to go in to a new field at this point are just showing good sense. Unfortunately there are a lot of unscrupulous trade schools out there just waiting to take your money. You really have to watch it and check to see what their actual placement rates are. Not that you need them to place you in a job. It helps to see how much employers value the degrees they offer and if the field is even hiring.

I heard a report on NPR a few weeks ago about the fact that some schools get financing backed by the government for your entire degree, instead of just 1 semester at a time. Then if you have to stop for some reason, they collect the entire amount from you. School loans can't be blown off. They will garnish your wages and they can't be cleared by doing a chapter 13.

Retraining people for jobs they can make a living at is just good ole common sense. The people earn money and the taxpayers get their investment back. Just like bailing out GM was a good idea. They kept millions employed and GM is close to paying them back. Sometimes common sense just has to be put into action. An uneducated public is one of the many reasons we are in the ditch and still struggling to get out. All the other civilized countries have much better programs for educating and training their work force. Won't ever happen here. They might have to raise our taxes a few cents to keep our country from going goodbye. A lot of Americans enjoy cutting off their noses to spite their face. It's too bad.

The last 50 years or so have been pretty good except for Nam. For the first time since the 40's the general feeling amongst parents is that their children will not have as good a life as they did. That shows that people feel the future is bleak.

I think 0 is pretty low income

We are not sure DH will even be eligible for unemployment. He hasn't worked enough in the last couple years, so we may be down to nil. Literally. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. ZERO. If that be the case....I'm scared

Either way...we'll survive. I was serious about building a mud hut

I don't think there is much negativity here, more like frustration. Everyone is making good points about what everyone should do or not do. I believe no matter what we HAVE to do to survive, that is the issue. If it is taking a measly $10 hour job or cutting firewood, or doing handyman work, or WHATEVER,...it is in YOUR place to do it. My DH takes his unemployment every year for no more than 5 months due to seasonal work,.... We make do and we don't complain, because this is what WE choose to do. If you choose to do different, then prepare yourself for the if whats,....its all life folks,...pull yourself up by your boot strings and grab the bull by the horns. If life were easy, how boring would that be??

Little advise from an old fart, I was 40 before i learned. When thru all those up and down . Then it hit me....unless you payed cash its not your. So started paying off everything. Was not easy....like the car payed off, keep putting those car payments in the bank, yep next time payed cash for next car. My first new truck wasn't untill 2008.

I have got to the point if I want it , save for it. When my hours got cut in half, still able to pay only bills i have. like gas ,elect, phone. and yes TAXES.

No credit cards...get offer for then monthly, those get thrown in the trash.

Just because you get to drive that new car or truck , if your making payment...its not your. Banks can take it in hard time, really wasn't your anyway. Same with the house ...many that are losing them really had just been making payments for years, almost like rent.

When you can pay cash, need something ok ,but if it just a want..save for it. Few thing I did want a new gun, just worked a day of overtime to buy it.

Peoples WANTS will alway be there, few really NEEDS.....food, cloths, way to get to work. Place to stay.

No I don't have alot of cash, but everyting I have is mine, not the banks.

(We do have credit cards, as they are free money for 30 days... However we BE SURE to pay them on time and have the funds to pay them.. We think of them the same as cash in our wallet.)

My husband got laid off a year and a half ago, got a job paying 1/2 the money of that one. We survived and he finally got a job making what he was making at the original job about a month ago. Now I find out that MY job could be in jeopardy. This is extremely stressful, but on the other hand...

In the past week a neighbor lost his grandson to SIDS, another neighbor lost his 22-yr-old son in a wreck, a family friend went into hospice with end stage pancreatic cancer, and mt boss's parents were both shot and killed b/c someone wanted to rob their home. So I thank God every day that I have financial worries and haven't had to deal with all the other stuff.

My husband's unemployment is *POOF*

So now I'm the only income and I'm working day and night on my business to maybe make $500-$600 if I'm lucky.

He's insured so I have him listed on Craigslist for Handyman work... he maybe gets a call 2 times a week and maybe gets a job around $50 every 2 weeks. We got snow today... otherwise he would have done some more bird houses for sale which we list as well.

I don't care how hard you work... you never can have enough to live without some help from somewhere?! No matter how I balance it... we can not pay the rest of this months bills without pulling out all our tax money I have to pay. The federal government will not look kindly on my not paying our taxes to live.

You have been going through this a long time. What kind of work do you do? If I could make $500-600 we'd be doing good. Is that monthly or weekly? Either way we would be okay. I'm looking for something part time now.
