My first chicks ever were supposed to arrive today. They were shipped yesterday, and I was tracking them obsessively. This morning, when they were still in Florida, I got extremely worried, considering the fact that I'm in New York. I started making phone calls at about 8:45.
When the delivery status was updated to OUT FOR DELIVERY.....in FLORIDA. I ran to my post office, and after 45 minutes, I find out that the USPS in Florida, ACCEPTED the package, declared as live birds, to be delivered in Ithaca. Then, after the poor chicks had been to a sorting facility and two post offices in Florida, the USPS in FLORIDA refuses to ship the package to Ithaca, claiming that Ithaca's post office doesn't accept live birds. However....remember, I'm standing with the postmaster at this point.....our post office DOES ACCEPT LIVE BIRDS, and the postmaster explains this to the folks who rejected the package. Regardless, over this 26 hour period, the people in Florida have managed to mishandle the package to such a degree that they've killed two chicks, left one chick barely holding on, and only two other chicks made it back to the breeder alive and well.
This was a HORRIBLE DAY!!! I was trying to be a good owner, so I took a half a day from work so I would be available to pick them up the second they came home. And my poor 3 and a half year old, the first thing out of his mouth afternoon when I picked him up at daycare was, "Daddy, are we picking up the baby chicks now?"
