Anyone else doing the "chick wait"?

Wow, I never knew that I wasn't the only one out there impatiently waiting for my chickies! I even went ahead and got 6 buckeye babies from a breeder (couldn't resist!) almost 2 weeks ago and still have 24 more coming the weeks of April 30th and June 4th. Also, I had a friend of a friend give me a lone survivor TSC chick that she couldn't stand to keep by herself! I had to convince my fiance to build the coop twice as big as we had originally planned and we are getting ready to finish up the grow out brooder in the coop to move my buckeye babies too. Since someone asked for pics I will include several for you all to drool over!

so cute!! What is with the bands on the legs?

So stinkin' CUTE! I am going to email the breeder this morning and see if she has gotten started shipping and see where I am on her list. I can't wait ANY LONGER! She will probably never sell chicks to me again! Contacting her twice isn't THAT BAD.....IS IT?

I just heard back from the breeder. MY chicks are hatching NEXT WEEK!!!!

I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!! My "chick wait" is almost over!!!! I hope everything goes well! I have already started into worrying about them making the trip here to Georgia......and they haven't even hatched yet!

My first chicks ever were supposed to arrive today. They were shipped yesterday, and I was tracking them obsessively. This morning, when they were still in Florida, I got extremely worried, considering the fact that I'm in New York. I started making phone calls at about 8:45.

When the delivery status was updated to OUT FOR DELIVERY.....in FLORIDA. I ran to my post office, and after 45 minutes, I find out that the USPS in Florida, ACCEPTED the package, declared as live birds, to be delivered in Ithaca. Then, after the poor chicks had been to a sorting facility and two post offices in Florida, the USPS in FLORIDA refuses to ship the package to Ithaca, claiming that Ithaca's post office doesn't accept live birds. However....remember, I'm standing with the postmaster at this point.....our post office DOES ACCEPT LIVE BIRDS, and the postmaster explains this to the folks who rejected the package. Regardless, over this 26 hour period, the people in Florida have managed to mishandle the package to such a degree that they've killed two chicks, left one chick barely holding on, and only two other chicks made it back to the breeder alive and well.

This was a HORRIBLE DAY!!! I was trying to be a good owner, so I took a half a day from work so I would be available to pick them up the second they came home. And my poor 3 and a half year old, the first thing out of his mouth afternoon when I picked him up at daycare was, "Daddy, are we picking up the baby chicks now?"

I'm so sorry this happened to you. It's stressful enough waiting for chicks to come when everything goes right, let alone what you went through. Even harder when you have a little one that is super excited for their arrival too. I hope everything goes well from now on. Good luck!

That is horrible!!! I can't believe the post office refused to send them!! Has this breeder encountered that before? What are you going to do now? Is the breeder going to resend them?

The breeder was wonderful about the whole thing. No, she's never run into this before. Obviously, we were both heartbroken about the chicks. She offered me a full refund, or to resend a batch of new hatchlings, because we didn't want to traumatize the surviving chicks any longer. At first, I said I'd go with the hatchlings, but after thinking about it, I decided to find a person who has silkies closer to home, because I didn't want to go through another event like this one, or simply another day of waiting and wondering. Again, the breeder was AMAZING about the whole thing!!!

Sorry that happened to you. I think you made the right desicion. I wouldn't want to ship any chicks after that either. I wish you the best of luck! Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I hope I didn't kill this thread. I've been loving participating in it, it was just pretty devastating, after waiting as long as we did, to go through what we went through on Thursday.

Anyway, we found some silkies locally, 2 blue and 2 black. Here they are.

We're getting our 3 speckled sussex, 3 golden comets, and 2 easter eggers on Monday.

Oh, they are sooo cute, and I'm so jealous!!!! I still have a few weeks until mine come. I love black and blue silkies. I have Partridge colored ones. I would love to get more Silkies, but they seem to get picked on by my big fattie hens, so I probably shouldn't. I think you will like your SSs and EEs. I have both and they are pretty nice chickens and seem to lay pretty good. I'm very lucky that both my EEs lay blue eggs! I have never had Golden Comets, but I have some Red Stars coming, I think they are the same thing. Good luck with your new babies!! I bet your 3 yr old is thrilled!!!
