Ok, I'm going to be the devil's advocate for caution in making sure I purchase eggs from AI clear stock. Read the CDC page on Avian Flu. Google photos of chickens with AI. It's a horrible way to die.

An outbreak of AI in a state can possibly cause millions of dollars in lost birds and damages to its commercial poultry industry.

there is no way to not have this disease at some point waterfowl caries it a lot that and wild birds there are a coupla strains that birds pigs and us pass around being knoledgeable about bio security is the best hope for your flock

Once VA gets the NPIP paperwork from the hatchery, you just may get caught, your real address and phone number may be forwarded to them.

Yep, it is a PIA, but that's what it takes for me to do business legally. Every State has their own regulations, like I said before, some even require an entry permit you have to call ahead and get.

So if it's legally required to do business it's not exactly voluntary.

It is voluntary with the Feds. You can get your birds tested before you ship them, NPIP forms are not necessary if you have negative test results and a CVI.

It's just easier to do business legally in the NPIP program.

I will chime in here and be honest with you all. Before I joined BYC I never even heard of NPIP before. Even when I informed the town of my birds. All they told me is they just needed to know I had them in case there was an outbreak.

Now I have read up on what my state would like of us who have chickens and they will even come out and test your flock for free. Yes free you can be darn sure I am getting on that as soon as my chicks are of age.

If anyone is interested in the Massachusetts site here is the link.

I am glad to have read up on everything because I was thinking of buying some eggs eventually and now I know what I need from the seller.

That site is not up to date, they must be AI H5/H7 clean too now.

Jean just made my point for me. Out of date gov't web pages mean I can't be the NPIP police since I can't know if they are correct or not, so I can't look up NPIP participants reliably. I did see the NPIP participant pages for Georgia and it sort of surprised me how few folks are actually participating in it. Of course, that may be out of date.
