There is no truth to the assumption that dogs will "get the taste of blood" and start killing animals. The little ball crazy Toy Fox Terrier that I have as an avatar is no less ball crazy and no more vicious than he was before he got his first raw chicken necks. When I can afford it, my dogs get two meals a day, one of some kind of dairy (yogurt, cottage cheese, or milk with egg in it) mixed with kibble and the other of chicken/turkey necks or giblets or liver of some kind.
This kind of diet ensures clean teeth, good intestinal flora, and healthy, shiny coats. There is no change in attitude at all--my collie is still a sweet vacuous girl, my MinPin cross rescue is still bouncy, and all of my TFTs are still terrierists. I think that the problem is not so much that dogs get a taste for blood as it is that they have more energy from getting fewer additives in their food and that they had poor training to begin with. A lot of owners prefer to make excuses and dispose of their dogs, rather than investing time in training proper behaviors. That being said, a lot of people also assume that dogs are safe around cats, chickens, and small children and I wouldn't leave a dog unattended around any of the above, regardless of whether it's fed Old Roy or fresh chicken or venison.
All our hens when they get older or the extra roosters (Ok one small rooster). Are going to the dogs when we slaughter
As for the dogs getting blood lust the majority of dogs fed raw dont realize that the thing covered with feathers out in the yard is dinner. Most just want to chase it because it squaks.
RAW people are not just giving the dogs the whole chicken. They get supplments and other parts as well. There is a ratio of bones to organs to muscle meat but I cant remember right now.
There is a difference between raw meat (i.e. butchered, cleaned, plucked, etc) and "just killed" meat (i.e. kill a chicken, and feed it to your animal).
mine eat the old and processed left overs..they havent turned into killers because of it..like others said a dog that kills animals is killing because they like the rush of the chase and kill..most are not killing to eat them.Raw is far better IMO,look at how many dogs die of cancer and other odd diseases..I myself lost 2 collies,a mom and daughter one year apart due to the very same cancer..it had to be comeing from the crap in the dry food..how many dogs have seazures, skin disorders, bowel disorders..I believe mostly from the junk in the processed foods..raw bones does amazing things for their teeth..if for no other reason feed raw bones just to avoid expensive teeth cleanings.
Gay renee - actually there are a lot of people that still eat raw meat, mostly beef from what I've read, they swear there are great health benefits. The problem is most people don't have the proper bacteria in their intestines to digest it so the "bad" bacteria take over thats when people get sick from under cooked food. Early in this pregnancy I'm in now I got a horrible craving for raw beef. For a week or two I had bloody raw, hardly cooked steaks every other night and I would just look at ground beef and wanted to eat a handful of it (I didn't). I'm usually a well done person, wouldn't even think about eating bloody steak now, its just what my body needed at the time.
As for catching vs eating - when we had a litter of rabbits get out during our brief attempt at meat rabbits last year my dogs killed some, but had no interest in eating them, but they're labs that's what their meant to do. Hence why I wouldn't trust them with my chickens. Our boston terrier is around our chickens everyday - no problems.
Trying not to go where we are prohibited, but as a former LEO the only people that I knew that fed raw as in bloody meat I put in jail. Yes they added additives such as gun powder. I also was a butcher and when a customer orders a couple hundred pounds of beef hearts and tells you it is to feed the pit bulls raw it raises a eyebrow. Yes I turned him in and yes he went to jail.
Now I realize that you are legitimate, but the fact is these people(I can't type what I really think of them) feed raw meat for a purpose. I feed my dogs chickens and offal but never raw always cooked. I always feed my 14 year old wolf chicken bones cooked in a pressure cooker. As the bones are completely broke down she gets more benefit, and she is healthy and well past the lifespan for a wolf. I give a thumbs up for feeding a diet to the dogs you grow or raise yourself, but feel a thumbs down for feeding raw.
I do apologize as I am not accusing anybody of anything, just making note that if the professionals(scumbags) feed their dogs raw, why would they be doing it? I see no health benefits between raw and cooked, actually cooking should break down the meat for a older dog, and give them more benefit from the bones. It is true that a dogs and a wild dogs digestive tract can handle raw spoiled meat. They also handle worms and a much shorter lifespan than a properly cared for pet.
Again please no offense is meant, it is just a humble persons opinion, and I respect yours too. I just happen to disagree. Also I do not consider feeding cooked meat in anyway raw and do it myself.
lorie, I agree wholeheartedly about the meat being better for our dogs' health, but don't forget that we over-vaccinate our dogs terribly. Vets give my 7-pound TFTs the same vacs that they give my 55-pound collie and don't bat an eye. A lot of breeders and dog fanciers/exhibitors are moving away from giving shots after the puppy shots have been given.
That being said, I am planning to give my dogs my chicken and quail necks and innards when I process them. I think that dogs do better on a more natural diet--the only reason I still feed kibble is because I travel to dog shows a lot and I hate carting around a cooler along with all of my other stuff.
