Anyone set yesterday or today?

More leds is not neccesarily better. You want a tight focused beam and having lots of bulbs doesn't give you that. My 9led flashlight is my worst one for candling. The maglights seem to vary. Until recently my cheap 3 led one I got from walmart was best. It uses 3 AA batteries to power the 3 bulbs.

Earlier this summer we got invited along to explore some caves. Everyone had a flashlight so about 20 flashlights in all. Not having a chance to grab one from the house I stopped at a nearby target and spent 10mins deliberating over flashlights until everyone was ready to drag me off and leave me to wander around in the dark. I finally settled on a River Rock flashlight. Compact, 1w bulb, 1 AA battery, water proof, and nice thick shatterproof glass. It turned out to be the clearest, brightest beam of light we had even when compared to much larger flashlights. Someone even had a big bulky spot light with an incandescent bulb and my little palm length flashlight was providing more useful light than that. It kept getting run off with by various people whenever we found an opening to explore. So when I got home I decided to try candling eggs. It was perfect. The beam was a perfect width with nearly all the light being focused in the egg. I could even see well enough into the dark brown eggs to make out some veins. They also had a 2w version in the same size but the battery life was very short and I didn't want to get stuck in a cave with a dead flashlight.

I think the foster puppy buried my digital camera in the yard.. along with half the house so far....

I tried to look for a pic online and didn't find one. I did find tons of posts on various forums which had various uses for flashlights from photography to night hunting that put the river rock flashlights right up at the top of everyone's favorite. Here is a review for the .5w version that uses 2AAA instead with pictures of the light beams of various flashlights for comparison. http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=99179 Apparently the river rock brand is only made for target and no one can find who manufacturers them to see what other names they might be sold for elsewhere.

Well Target is on the way to church and I think I need one of these flashlights. What day would be best to try to candle? I set them on Wed afternoon.

Thanks

I candled my eggs that I put in on Tuesday and I've got veining in about 95% of the eggs! Woohoo! I'll wait a few more days and check again to see if more are going to vein. I just put more in last night too.

It looks like the ones that aren't veining are mostly my Columbian Wyandotte eggs.

They were really inexpensive so if they don't hatch I'm not out a ton of money, thank goodness.

Good luck everyone!

I candled mine on day five, there's 15 eggs, clear veining on 10, a "maybe" on 1 other. I think the other 4 are clears, but I'll wait until at least day 10 before I pull any out. I usually don't candle until day 10, but I just had to see on these Buckeyes!

I set 11 Black/Lavender Silkie eggs yesterday. Had them shipped so my fingers crossed....the last shipped Lavender eggs I tried, not one developed.

There was one with a minor crack and I sealed it with wax so I'll what happens.
Good luck everyone!!!

My incubator was having major temperature issues. 103F and then a few hours later 96F and then back up again. Finally figured out the puppies must have popped the air conditioner vent open on that side of the room.

Problem with living in a small house is there is no location that doesn't come into contact with air from the heater/ac or light from the windows unless I take steps to block it.

Can I join as a hatching buddy?

I put 8 wheaten marans eggs under my GL Cochin broody on the 18th. This is my first broody and my first time hatching so company would be welcome. The days were flying by until I put those eggs under my hen. Now they seem to be crawling!
