Whaling season is only 3 months long. The whaling boats have only 3 months to reach their quotas and it's something like 600 of one type of whale and 300 of another (or something similar to that). If they don't reach their quota, then that's it. They can't be out whaling beyond their season. So if Sea Shephards (sp) can stop them for ANY amount of days, they are making it harder for them to get that many more before the end of the season. If that whaling ship just spent a few days trying to keep SS away long enough to harpoon a whale and drag it aboard, and even though SS may contaminate the meat by throwing the rancid oils aboard the whaling ships, then they have been successful because the whalers cannot profit from that whale. You said "If you make the whale unusable to the whalers, they will just go out and kill another whale. It makes the issue worse." You have a point in that it does make the whale unusable, but the time spent on that whale is time lost now. They can't make that up. They can only process so many whales a day and if you make 1 whale unusable, then that makes it one less whale they will get towards their quota. Now they have to go out, find another pod and start harpooning those.

It's a sad situation because of the 'gray area' of the unpoliced whaling waters. I don't feel that their tactics are looney or crazy...SS is doing what they can when they are not getting the help they need from their government. They raise the $$ to fight the whaling ships, get donations-including the new Bob Barker vessel. Why do you think the name of the SS vessel is the Steve Irwin?

Noone is willing to settle the argument as to whether or not the waters that are being whaled is legal or illegal. That's the problem...the gray area. Personally, I wish someone would decide whether or not it is illegal to whale in those waters because it is only going to get worse. But it is also quite impressive to see a group of people so passionate and willing to stand up for what they feel is right.

It is the Steve Irwin chicks4kids.
These are the same people who have destroyed years worth of cancer research.
Broke onto private property and released hundreds of minks that were run over on the local highway.

Relook up the definition of terrorism. The use of means to create terror in any group, by any means possible. Including chemicals, weapons or even biological. To cause either physical, mental harm or even death.

Now after reading this THAT makes a lot of sense. Imagine if they contaminated all the dead whales, no profits for the whalers ! Its great! Now if that theory works hopefully they will be out of business someday. Now, how do those guys who stall them make money? Running those ships must be expensive...

Has anyone ever noticed that the only people that volunteer to go on those anti whaling vessels are the dredlock anti-bathing scourge of the planet for the most part. I mean why doesn't someone over the age of 40 say go out there. The captain is always the one telling the help "hey get in that skiff and go get em" the way In see it there is a few select living a pretty easy life on the ship at someone else's' expense. Season to season they always have a small core group of people and hardly any return help that should say something.

wow thats very judgmental.. I would love to go on a tour with them but I have a family to fed at home but if my kids were older I would be gone in a heart beat and I am far from the dread lock wearing anti bathing kinda person... I am a nurse.. a well educated person... and they do have return staff... but dont forget they run more then one boat... so just cause you dont see them on camera.. does not mean they are not there... and there are also legal reasons.. I know one guy was banned from serving on board due some pending court case related to the actions of the Steve Irwin while it was at sea and the addi gil incident

for every hour you see on TV there are at least 200 hours "on the cutting room floor"

Young people are usually freer to do that kind of volunteer work. Us older folks who would love to have kids and jobs and mortgages to worry about! A lot of us with kids do other volunteer things that don't require us to leave home for months at a time. And, NO ONE has an easy time of it on a boat that size. It's not a cruise boat. Very cramped, nothing even close to a hot shower, and you have to use a hand pump to get the very very very cold water to flow, er, I mean trickle. It's so not easy to captain a boat like that, esp with newbies every season that need to be taught how to do everything! I have a lot of respect for those guys! Staying warm is a much bigger priority than taking an ice shower every day.
