Appenzeller Spitzhauben

Thank you!

My Spitz didn't require alot of space, they are content with a 8 ft x 16 ft run and never had any issues with them that fenced confinement a problem. Never had to cage any yet so far.

I have them and love them

They are definetly a keeper although not my primary stock. My theory is that they are too small to form mutts. Mine are always approaching me although I never coddle them.

Found out the hard way they don't like confinement. Also cats are a problem so they need night shelter and a big roo from another breed to keep the kittens away.

I bought one for a friend. When she lost her Sptiz hen, she HAD to go find more. She now has about 20. I think she will be selling off the "extra pairs" soon. If any one in Calif. is interested.

But I have something very different. I have Buff laced Polish crossed with a Silver spangled Hamburg. They look a lot like Chamois Spitzhauben. I would love to work a trade with someone looking for a project. (The top one is mine)

Well they mature about the same time as other chickens and lay the same time. Mine lays about the same as my Orpingtons. Started the same time and finished the same time and as {un}prolific as they are.

I found unfortunately that they are subject to small predators unlike my big girls. The one survivor left her little coop for the big coop and now hangs out with the pack. I like them but I you can't coop them but they will get eaten without big roo protection. Anyway natural selection wiped them out in my flock.

I'm sorry to hear that.
My biz partner has them in small coops. They do fine. She does let them out now and again. They lay daily and she even got 4 eggs out of a coop with 3 hens...in a 24 hr period. She says they are laying machines.

They have to stay semi-cooped as they get into stuff, like potted plants and hay. But she LOVES them. I'll get one to put with my Polish and Houdan.
They seems to have started laying before the Marans of the same age.
