I’ve been posting so many sad things on here lately that I felt the need to share something nice!
Of course, it still comes with all the sad stories that led to it, but some of the April showers really did lead to flowers—or at least, the friendliest batch of chicks I’ve ever raised!

It started with our desire for a definitively female Mille Fleur D’Uccle (we’ve had an absolutely terrible little Porcelain d’Uccle that has terrorized my younger sister bc we don’t want to inflict him on anyone else). My Pet Chicken was the only place that had them in the time frame we wanted, so we ordered from them. First box came with 6 dead chicks, and 2 living ones. I went to pick it up and the post office people told me they’d tried to put water in there but looking in there seemed little to be done. I was devastated. Crying in the post office isn’t my best look but mostly I’m more worried I traumatized those poor people getting their mail by holding a barely-cheeping tiny little box and bawling my eyes out.
The two that made it home were dubbed Moonlight and
Sunshine. I was so traumatized by my excitement (first time driving to get them myself, most involved with the order I’d ever been) being crushed by receiving a box of dead babies who I then had to bury in my garden with the other lost little ones, that I carried Sunshine and Moonlight around with me everywhere it was feasible to bring them. Online appointments and boring work calls suddenly became fun. Relaxing, I had two balls of warmth to cradle at all times. It was wonderful.
And it formed a bond between them and me that made them more affectionate than any other babies we’d ever had. Never had chicks had so much one-on-one time with me, with no others to divide attention.

As a result, when we got our replacement chicks (two of which died) (don’t order from My Pet Chicken) they followed the lead of the older two.

And even though there have been too many days I spent away from them caring for dying chickens, they are still so sweet they come and snuggle in my lap.

Now we will see if this continues when they grow up, but for now, it is making me happy when a lot of things have gone wrong.

Our May flowers: (I promise we clean their enclosure they are just supremely good at getting it messy again)

Special mentions to Dandelion and Reepicheep, who did not make it past the first week, but were much loved for their little time on Earth.

I love them all so much and am so excited to welcome our newest little ones into the wider flock. Thanks for reading!
