Are chickens really noisy?

Well if you have a silkie there reeeeaaally llooouuud well mine is anyway

Omg I just bought two adult Silkie crosses and one of them is soooo loud! I thought maybe she was upset about something and I've been running outside a lot to check on her so it's good to know that it's just a breed tendency.

:gig She sounds like a drama queen.

I will post a video of her obsessive cackling

We have the most adorable 9-day-old chicks chirping away in our living room. Sometimes, however, they decide to have a squawk fest. We live on a small lot and were hoping that the chickens would be fairly quiet once outside, as we're pretty sure chickens are not allowed in our development. Any thoughts? Will the neighbors complain?

They are not very noisy once they get older, and are outside. I have about 10 roosters and they are pretty quiet most of the time

Mine are louder than I expected.
1 EE is super quiet & sweet. Barely even sings an egg song.
1 RIR has a loud egg song that goes on for a solid minute or two.

1 Barred Rock that is the whiniest, squawkiest complainer ever. From morning to night, squawk "I'm hungry"
Squawk "I want out of the run"
Squawk "Someone else is in the nestbox"
Squawk "I'm going into the nestbox"
Squawk "The sun's going down"
:barnie:duc
That sounds like my Blue Amauracana (misspelled I am sure)

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us:ya

The good news is they're generally pretty quiet until they start laying and then depending on breed not too bad. Do find out what your laws are and nosy neighbors can often be bribed with eggs. You can search your local threat in the where are you where am I forum and we also have a forum about various laws.

Assuming you have all hens, for the most part, they're not too noisy. However egg songs can get fairly loud, my loudest hen can be heard about 1/4 mile away. But some hens rarely sing it at all (and some sing for everyone including themselves). You can go to youtube and search for "egg song," it's probably the sound that people most associate with chickens.
