Are illegal immigrants a BIG issue where you live?

My opinion varies a bit from some of the others.
My relatives came here in the early 1800s and found their way over time and with the help of other existing Americans as was written in some of their earliest records. They spoke the language (some were German) of their original country for a number of years. (church records say 50yrs) All loved their families and fought in all American wars.

I know that there was a great deal of prejudice about my religion and nationalit(ies). It was quite hard for them to move through those sillies labels.

I now feel very priviledged from many aspects... and pass that along to my children and grandchildren.

Aside from the growing numbers of people on this earth, how different is today's experience from my family's?

I am in support of latinos and other immigrants and their efforts to work hard for their money. Though in many cases, they may not be 'legal', aren't they all members of our world and loved by our God? I don't think he's drawing any lines.

I do believe that there should be 'enforced' rules and laws, but I think we should support those that are now here. They have come here out of desperation... willing to work and fight for their way in our world. What a terrible situation it must have been that forced them to leave their homes and families in order to survive.

My two cents. Have at it.

ps both my town and another nearby town are now 1/3 latino

I'm confused - do 'they' carry signs that say "I'm illegal"? There's a lot of "legal" brown skinned folks in this country, many of whose people were here before the Europeans showed up. If you're worried about American jobs, quit shopping at WalMart, for heaven's sake. Everything there was made in China. Sorry, but nothing irks me more than white entitlement. Please, please try not to forget that at the end of the day "these illegals" are human beings too.

Ditto, ditto, double-ditto, Fowl-Language.

This country was built on others coming to it from different countries. Shall we all go home to the Country of our ancestors and give this one back to the rightful owners? It's all in perception.

They are not on 'vacation,' they are living here and raising a family! It's fine to keep speaking your native language at home or within your community, but do as all the other immigrants have done for the past 200 years when they came to America. LEARN ENGLISH.

Why should the government and businesses have to pay extra to re-do signs, forms, menus, telephone messages, etc. in foreign languages? You go to France the signs are in French. You go to Germany the signs are in German. Etc. ad nauseum. It might be 'unofficial,' but the US is an English speaking country.

How would I have any clue if they were here legally or not?
Sure, we have migrant pickers come through seasonally, but I don't know their personal business.
As long as someone else started the thread, I'll go on my own rant as a representative of USA's OTHER border - Canada! All my life we have been able to jaunt quickly and easily from one country to the next, enjoying all that we had to share. Have you tried crossing the border to Canada lately? What a mess! Granted, it was a holiday weekend last time I did it, but it took over 3 hours!
All I'm trying to say is that we have to be careful with how aggressively we try to treat one problem - often we end up making a different problem somewhere else...

Thank you i agree

My family came here in the 50's from Cuba, times were not tough, but Castro was taking over, the middle & upper class had an opportunity to flee and these United States took us/them in willingly.

Has anyone seen Morgan Spurlock's show 30 Days? There is an episode where a man against illegals had to go live with an illegal family, and learn about their lives in Mexico. It was astonishing the 3rd world country conditions they are living in and cannot rise out of...

if we only knew what it was like to sleep on a dirt floor with the broken roof raining on you, while you try to sleep among the hunger pain sounds coming from your mama & papa & siblings..

I don't know.. maybe we would feel differently about WHY they are coming here...

When we sold our house in MD, it was purchased by an illegal immigrant - I could not afford a $300,000 - but she did it. I know she was illegal, because she stated at closing that she needed a job....my husband offered to hire her - she could not produce a green card nor paperwork applying for one...he promised her a job if she could, but she never came back. Last I knew, she lived in that house with 2 other families.

Not everyone is illegal...not everyone is criminal. But, even if you came here out of desperation (even if illegally), God bless you! for having the nerve to do something! But, if you continue to disrespect this country that has provided you an opportunity to provide - you should go back! If you respect it and those who were here before you - welcome!
