Are we becoming a police state?

Quote:
No, I dont think the officer over reacted. I have seen the video, the officer had spent 10-15 minutes trying to calm this woman down and explain to her why she was being stopped and her offense. The woman was continually cursing at the officer and basically looking like a crazy person. When he asked her to sign her ticket that is when she just lost it and started becoming physical with the officer, he kept a very calm cool head all through the event until this lady just went too far. I will still stand by my initial response in that she deserved it. She was being violent with the officer and a danger to herself. They tried to restrain the lady but she was fighting the officer. So bam, tasered.
Police officers have a thankless job and are villified by so many in our respectless society. Every single call or traffic stop could be their last, they dont know. How would you deal with the pressure of going into work every day knowing there is a possibility you might be put into a life or death situation?

Yep... the crazy old bat deserved it. You want to go around attacking a police officer, you take it like a big girl then.
Lucky all she got was tasered if she was attacking an officer...

I am SO sick of people in this country makes excuses and wanting sympathy for their bad behavior..
THIS is why things are getting so bad in this country...

By your definition, we are in no way, shape or form a police state. Perhaps if someone would like to know what a real police state is like they can build a time machine and go live in Stalinist Russia or perhaps Nazi Germany or Mao's China.......or the list could go on and on but OUR country would not be on that list. Yay us!
Because arent we at this moment expressing ourselves in an open fashion to exhibit views not necessarily held by all. The black helicopters arent showing up at night to take us away because of what we post on BYC now are they?

As for the "you said this", alot of people write that way because they have been taught to cite as they write. It helps the reader follow the exact train of thought at times. If you go to college someday and have to learn the MLA or APA style of writing you will understand that better....and I personally despise some of that style but it is the academic style of writing.

;)The definition was Wikipeia's, not mine. If this country is not becoming an police state, why are many of our congress men & women, plus many people of this country thinking our President is breaking the Constitution in so many ways ( over 90 days in Lybia, etc. ) Why did the FDA raid an Amish farm in PA., destroy all his milking equipment for selling unpasturized milk ? Please excuse my writing style, etc. as I'm am only high school educated, but I do know right from wrong & the Federal Govt. has been trying & gaining more control over us all in the past several years. Remember when Nixon was striped of some of the power he tried to maintain ? We had a congress that was using it's power over the executive branch back then. Now days our congress seems to be part of the executive branch. Thankfully we do have a few congress people that are still fighting for our rights but I think it might be too late now.
Like I did say in an earlier reply, check out "New World Order". The internet has slowed them down very much as more people are becoming aware of it's purpose & the mainstream media (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX) do not tell us the true news, they just tell us about royal weddings, hollywood scandals, etc. Many real news sites are available on the internet. You should check them out & see where I get all my infomation. You should also check out an orgination called Blackwater & you might find out a few things that should open your eyes. It will be more than the mainstream media is telling. I could go on & on but I'm busy trying to remain invisable as possible.

I just wanted to add: personal accountability and responsibility doesn't just apply to little old grannies and mentally disturbed people, it applies to police officers and people who are authority figures. Another thing, just because the USA doesn't completely look like Stalinist Russia or Nazi Germany, doesn't mean that it isn't like them in some shape or form. OK now that I've posted to this thread I won't have the urge to answer anymore.

Yep... they can be dangerous... doest matter though. Shes was attacking him.
And about the gun.... the cop told him to put down the gun.... he didnt. If i was a police officer and someone with mental problems was standing there holding a gun.... and i told them to drop the gun and they didnt.... yep... sadly, the cop had to do what he had to do. The guy was warned...
Like i said.. you want to do stuff like that.... take what happens to you like a big boy or girl then.... dont complain about it afterwards... when it was YOUR behavior that got you tasered or shot.. or whatever...

I did point out that he could have used a taser - it would have been totally justified then. Seriously, though, if a person does not pose an actual threat to an officer, there is no good reason to tase that person.

Off topic, but what's with the constant "..." in your posts? It's kinda freaking me out.

Come on Q, get real. You're a cop and a guy is standing 20' or 5' away holding a gun. What if the cop goes for his taser and the guy decides that's a good time to shoot the cop. He probably fired those 2 shots in rapid succession and missed center mass on the first shot. Cops are trained to shoot to kill. If you are looking to die that's a good way to do it. Besides it's doubtful the cop just shot him for not putting the gun down. The guy probably moved a little bit, causing the cop to fire.

I agree there are a number of cops that abuse their power. I'm not a teenager though, so I know how dangerous another person can be if they are within arms reach. At that point it's a matter of strength and training. The other guy may not look like a bad a** but he might just be pretty skilled in hand to hand. I can't blame a cop at all for not wanting to take someone down with just physical force if they are alone. Things could get ugly real quick.

The Constitution is actually relatively simple and easy to understand. It is a MYTH that it is a "complex" document that only experts can understand. I have a copy, I've read through it several times. It's very easy, if you hit something you don't understand, to simply ask the authors. The Federalist Papers are readily available at most libraries, and there are also sites like http://constitution.org/c5/index.php that contain massive amounts of the Founders' writings.

Timothy McVeigh, if I'm not mistaken, was not associated with any militia group.

What constitutes a homegrown terrorist, anyway? It seems to me that the "Constitutional Extremists" are the ones who have a better point. Right now, the government is more oppressive than King George III and Parliament at the time of our War for Independence. The only difference is that it's far more tactful and less conspicious.

You think the Constitution is easy to understand and only means one thing. You need to understand that you see it from one perspective, when in reality there are multiple perspectives on many of the items contained in it. The 2nd amendment comes to mind. People that think the Constitution is plain and simple have a teenage mind set. Teenagers tend to see everything as black and white. Life makes you understand that reality is actually different shades of grey.

Just finished reading James Yee's book For God and Country.

Excellent excellent book. Yee is a West Point grad. His story perfectly embodies both everything that is absolutely wrong with this country

AND

Everything that is right.

This government totally shafted a dedicated soldier. BUT< the system of checks and balances - which includes the press and the voice of the people - eventually worked and restored at least part of his life back to order.

That is how our system works. It is WHY it works.
It will ALWAYS go too far. First in one direction then the other

Then people get mad and the push pull gets heated and the swing shifts back and thirty years later it is too far in the other direction.

We lost Waaaaaaay too many of our rights in our endeavor for security. Luckily lots of people were angry and scared about that and while they remained quiet voices, they are pulling our rights back out of the jaws of the police state. It is, by far, not over, or is it a given.

Just be careful, rights that you want for yourself tend to be wanted by other groups you don't think should have them....

I think the biggest problem is people who won't stand up and take responsibility for their own actions. It seems every one is blaming the police the government, someone any body but themselves. I noticed this when the housing market crashed and people where losing their homes. Its not my fault its the banks fault for giving me a loan. My question is why did you buy that expensive of a house. We bought a house we could afford on one income and we have kept that house. No its not perfect but it is my home. When I hear about people complaining about being tasered (sp) most of the time they did something to put themselves in that spot. You break the law then you get what you get.

I don't care for the way our government is going, but it is going this way because the people in there are voting the way people are screaming for. I believe in less government but with people not taking responsibility for their actions then I guess there will be someone to make people responsible for their actions. When that happens we do lose our rights. I don't care what party is in office until they start voting to limit the governments power we the people are going to pay for it.

I also do not think all cops are bad, I do know that there are times when they have a split second to make a choice and then they have a million people saying oh I would have done this. Unless you where there you can't say what should have happened. Here if someone has pepper spray out the police will shoot first. Why, there was an officer that was trying to catch someone. That person spayed him in the face with mace, while the police officer was on his knees the criminal shot the police officer in the back of the head. The cop was not chasing him anymore could not even see him but the criminal shot him. So now cops will not take the chance with pepper spray. I can't say I blame them. I am not saying that what these officers did was right or wrong I was not there. I do know that there are some great police officers out there but there are also some bad ones just like any other job.

I do feel we are in a police state No not yet but we are getting that way and someday soon I fear we will be unless we the people do something to change it.

You're way off base on that one. Try to be real. Break each of your sentences down in that definition. Absolutely none of them apply. Someone else mentioned the military being used against the public. I'm pretty up on social and political events in the US. I haven't heard of our military being used in this country for anything except fighting fires and building dikes. The heaviest they have been used was in Katrina.

Our POTUS doesn't have any absolute power over anything except the military. Even then the Congress can cut off his money and eventually he has to withdraw from wherever he has our troops. It blows me away to hear stuff like that. It really shows how powerful the media is. Goebels would be proud.
