Are we becoming a police state?

Because we all know how dangerous old ladies are.

A more personal case - my grandma had called a relative and noticed that she sounded extremely sad. Asked what was wrong. As it turns out, the lady's husband had died a few days ago. A co-worker had gone outside and saw him standing outside with a gun. The relative's husband had been depressed lately, so an attempt at suicide was immediately suspected. He was told that he "should go back inside." So the co-worker informs the relative (no, I will not give names without permission), who goes outside and gets the same response. She calls the police. She witnessed all of what happened next. Cop shows up, tells him to drop the gun. He doesn't, though he isn't pointing it at the officer. Cop shoots him in the ARM. He still does not drop the gun. Cop shoots him in the chest, killing him. Keep in mind, he had the gun at his side and was in no way making a move to shoot at anyone. Right there, a taser would have been totally justified, but no, the cop uses lethal force. Not even an attempt to talk him out of it. "You can't commit suicide - I'll kill you first!"

it only takes a split second for them to point and shoot not condoning....but you know....there are lots of people to scared to do the deed....they call it suicide by cop...

Whenever Big Brother is mentioned I used to first think Of Janis Joplin. Now the first thing that pops in my head is the U.S. govt.....& "1984"....That book was writen many, many years ago,,,did he know what was really in process back then?

Yep... they can be dangerous... doest matter though. Shes was attacking him.
And about the gun.... the cop told him to put down the gun.... he didnt. If i was a police officer and someone with mental problems was standing there holding a gun.... and i told them to drop the gun and they didnt.... yep... sadly, the cop had to do what he had to do. The guy was warned...
Like i said.. you want to do stuff like that.... take what happens to you like a big boy or girl then.... dont complain about it afterwards... when it was YOUR behavior that got you tasered or shot.. or whatever...

No... a taser would not have been a safe option.. the guy could have still shot the gun off.

No, the police could not have used a taser in that instance! Being tased makes your muscles to contract (what muscles depends on where the probes hit). It could have caused the man to fire the gun injuring the officer or someone else. In most cases tasere are not dangerous. Are they sometimes used in instances where they probably shouldn't, yes. I am a Corrections Officer. I must say that our incidents of injuries (I mean inmates too, not just Officer injuries) are much less since our agency introduced tasers. They almost always cause much less damage than fighting someone. Do you know the damage a man can do to an old lady trying to restrain her? She could have ended up with broken bones that took months to heal. Where on 99% of people tasers are harmless. Do they hurt, absolutely, but that's the point. People are not taught to respect other people (I mean all people not just police) like they should anymore. I guess everyone has forgotten the golden rule. Officers are people and we ALL make bad decisions from time to time. I'm not trying to stand up for the ones who shouldn't be officers because they are out there too. I just believe the vast majority are good people, even if they do make a bad decision from time to time.

I have noticed that most on here are thinking a "Police State" is about actual police depts. Here is the definition of it. This definition discribes the state We The People are in now.
