I donated plasma (sold it, really) twice a week for over a year until the Sierra Vista clinic closed. Once I was hooked up and the machine was running, the staff pretty much left me alone, so I could watch a movie, read, take a nap etc., just not anything involving the right arm which was on "lockdown". No risk to the donor, as they use single-use sterile needles (like giving a blood sample during an exam, but the needle is way bigger).
The biggest drawback for me is they want you on a restricted diet that day, as the plasma separation takes the fat out of your bloodstream as well as the plasma. I pushed it one time and ate fried food, and the plasma looked like detergent water and I got a talking-to. And you're dehydrated and sometimes feeling a little "off" afterward.
But all in all, not a bad gig if you have the time.

Edited to add: And I don't think it takes three hours, I think it was around 90 minutes for the process, but sometimes all the chairs were full and I had to wait for a vacancy.
