Flagstaff rocks, I'm so jealous of the flagstaff people. Someday we will live there!

Also, I finally got a job today!!! A few days a week as a dental hygienist. It has only taken me a year of searching... this economy sucks!

Well we're hatching! I really thought the heat was too much, so yesterday I did the egg "float test" to see if they were still viable. The second they were in the water they started wiggling. So far we have one fluffed and 2 pipped... I'll add pics tomorrow.

Congrats... I do all of my own cleanings now and I am forced to take a day of every week. I enjoy the day off, I just don't like the loss of income. I feel semi retired and I've got a 7 year old. Funds will run out if things don't start to pick up a little.

Is it true that a bunch of dental offices in Arizona have closed? It really has me scared. Even the job I got today is only temporary (6 months or so).

I try to look on the bright side. My reasoning is that no one is getting cleanings or exams right now, so in a few years they'll all have perio and rampant decay. They'll all have to be placed on 3 month recalls. Then we'll be back in business!

In the meantime, try not to worry and just enjoy the time with your 7 year old. They grow up fast!

Over 200 offices in the last 2 years.

My problems:

Folks lose their job... no dental insurance... cancelled appointments
Folks don't lose their job, just their benefits... cancelled appointments.
Companies downtown (where my office is) are finding cheaper rents in Scottsdale so they are moving. I'm now too far away for a midday appointment. They look for another dentist.
Some folks come in for their six months, but they put off treatment until "times get better" everyone is tightening their budgets.
Back in 2007 I was looking for a hygenist because I was just too busy, making lots of $$, my girls were getting bonus regularly, now since their hours have been cut they are cancelling internet and cable, cell phones etc..... now its horrid. I had a full day for tomorrow but half the day cancelled and I'm off on Friday so only 3.5 days this week for me.

I've never seen so many vacancies (AVAILABLE) commercial signs since I've lived in Phoenix. It's like 1000s of business have gone under and we were WAY over built. 1000s of homes all of the valley are vacant. The next round of foreclosures will begin around September and peak in February and then we start Great Depression II.

If the bottom of the gulf blows up as many are predicting, it will make 911 look like a cake walk. Try a 20 to 50 ft tsumani all around the gulf. No more New Orleans, no more Naples, no more Key West, no more Kingston or Cancun. AND there won't be a particle of life left in the waters of the gulf.

On a positive note, I'm still holding out hope for the broody.

Good morning all -

It is now 6:50 am. Mahonri has somehow managed to post at 7:05 am. Is there a time warp in here that I am unaware of?? I feel like I have been transported to "the island"...

So I have a stupid broody! I don't want to have to break her, but I can't imagine that she (or an egg) will survive late June in Phx, AZ in a nesting box!! I have been tossing her out every morning and I tried to taker her out of the box and put her on a perch for the night, but she just throws a fit and goes back to the box.

Does anyone think I should give her a couple of eggs and let her sit? What if the eggs don't survive? It is freakin' hot! I don't want to end up going to search for a chick to give her. I don't need any more chickens!!!

I know you can "break" a broody, but I don't have extra cages and such. Wait! I just got a brilliant idea! Has anyone ever loaded all the nest boxes with cryo packs? Would that work??

Ugh! I am afraid I will lose this stupid chicken to the heat if she doesn't get out of the box!

Advice?

ETA - Now I see! BYC time is an hour ahead of AZ time. Is there a way to change that?

Well I don't know if it will be the same for you, but all 3 of my chicks were shrinkwrapped and I had to help them out. They never made more than a pip by themselves-- I don't think they could turn to zip. I saw my broody standing over them all day while they were hatching (not sitting) so maybe that's why. She's been doing that whenever it got really hot out... but I think that after they pipped they got too dry to do anything else.

Helping them out was no big deal though-- it was so dry that things just flaked away and there wasn't any blood. Here are some fluffy pics...
