How would you know if they were resistant short of exposing them to something? or is it from breeding stock that the parents have already been exposed? lol, had chickens 3 years and still new to all this.
I'd love to know what you find as far as herbs to boost their immune systems.. I would definitely grow some of that..

Mareks is one of those things that can be carried in by the wind and expose the whole flock. Mycoplasma based respiratory diseases are the same way. If one bird shows symptoms you can be assure the whole flock was exposed. In theory the ones that don't show symptoms any time soon after the first one did are resistant. The Mareks virus can complicate that though, because it can infect without external symptoms though by causing things like tumors in the reproductive organs instead. So once an outbreak happens its good to wait for awhile and see what happens.

Which is why I couldn't really pull it all together until Fugly had the green, kinda watery poop and the stumbling/slow movement. The chain of events all came together to create the full picture.

I wonder if mixing them with other breeds will have an impact on that?

I was doing some reading about it here on BYC and some members were saying that silkies, cochins and cclb are high risk.

I had some of the CCLB's here already before I got any of the NN's. I butchered the CCLB rooster because I wanted the NN rooster to be doing the breeding of the hen's. I had 3 of the CCLB hen's, and sold one of them. Another died on the nesting box in the high heat. One hen is still here. I have no green poop's in any of my whole flock, and everyone is looking good. I didn't get any silkies as chick's and hatching egg's until after you had already hatched out Fugly and he had grown to start breeding himself. Those chick's are in their own protected pen so as to be safe from the adult's.

Thank's for that info, as it's a good thing to know. I look mine over every day looking for any changes in them. So far, everything has been looking good over here.

I need to thin my herd. I have 12 hens that are 16-17 weeks old. I need to sell 6 of them. I thought a buddy was going to take them but he isn't now.

I am going to keep mostly my Sussex and an Easter egger. I have Golden laced Wyandotte, Golden comet, black sex links that need to go. Just too many for my back yard.

Morning All. Does anyone know of a breed that the roosters are docile ? I had to cull a roo that had started attacking, then the roo that took his place got stupid yesterday, I was in the run, opened up the old coop to get something, felt a bump against the back of my leg, didn't think anything of it, figured it was a chicken trying to get in. Then went to the new coop and as I am standing there opening the door, out of the corner of my eye I see Speed Racer trying to spur me, I'll be setting up a culling station today.. I hate the thought, but I'm not going to tolerate it. everything I've read is once they start there's no stopping them. 2 more roo's like this and I'll start buying hatching eggs and then culling any roo's out of the bunch
