Arizona Chickens

McMurray Hatchery had a link in the email to contact Fed legislators. If you want to copy or change my email to my senators please feel free--- here's what I just sent to Kelly and Sinema-- (I might try to find another thread to crosspost this on also for those in other states.)

You need to make sure the USPS can support the hatcheries shipping poultry. We were just informed that the USPS has an embargo on shipping live animals and it is not due to the weather (as a previous week embargo was said to be). This is and embargo due to a BACKLOG of packages!

Do you realize that the eggs are set in the incubators at least 3 weeks before the intended ship date and that the chicks can survive the mail for a 3 day period while they live on the egg yolk nutrition prior to hatch. An announcement that a BACKLOG of packages takes priority over LIVE chicks means probable death of thousands of chicks since these chicks cannot be delivered in that 3-day window of time set 3 weeks prior to this announcement.

Many people do not believe the government is supporting their lives or livlihoods - this prioritizing BACKLOG of packages over LIVE packages proves it. People ordering chicks are trying to take responsibility for their food and teach their kids something in a time when government services may not be relied on to do so. DO SOMETHING to support our way of life in Arizona.
This is great! Here's the thread on BYC on this topic:

I got an email from Hoover's hatchery this morning with the same thing about the post office as the McMurry one had yesterday. I think that it is Hoover's hatchery that supplies TSC with the chick's that they get in.
yes last I checked Hoover's supplies TSC and cal-ranch. I see I got a email from hoover;'s also.

Well, seen that it was cheaper to order the 100 pack than the 25 pack, so my next door neighbor that got their flock through me is going to split the cost with me and take 50 of them.

Are these jumbo size cartons big enough for duck eggs?

I haven't received them yet, but they probably would be. I don't have any duck egg's here to try to let you know for sure later. The reason why I really need the bigger size is because I have a Naked Neck hen that is laying a taller egg, and the large sized egg carton lid doesn't want to shut on them, and I don't want to crush the egg's trying to properly close the lid.

The Silver NN hen I got from you lays a pretty large egg, but the carton shuts! And it is a very nice brown/cream color.

The flock next door was really raising a racket over there. I found out that the reason why is that 3 of the hen's were in the same nesting box wanting to lay egg's, and a 4th hen was standing in the nesting box right next to it trying to figure out how she was going to get in the other nest with the other 3 girl's.

Checking in from PA. It’s freezing here. I was cleaning pens today and I couldn’t feel my toes. Silkie breeding programs coming along. Them and my layers have been laying like crazy all winter.

keep you fingers crossed for some warm weather or send me some of that AZ warmth.

I have eggs in 2 incubators with some due to hatch tomorrow. Love hatch days.

If you haven't already - you might check out Arizona company in Safford - https://www.sunpumps.com/
they do solar pumps for wells internationally. We use one of their pumps for our POOL for many years but I don't know how much an appropriate pump for a WELL costs. I'm sure it needs more power depending on the depth of your well. They are a very responsive and helpful company in our experience.

I called them and they said they don't come this far out, but I heard about someone who used to work for them who lives in this area, and someone I who knows him is planning to contact him for me this week. Fingers crossed. It's hard to get someone right now, because half of California, Oregon, and Washington is moving to Arizona, and they're buying up rural properties and trying to go off grid ASAP. :hit

Yesterday I put some towels on the clothesline. Big Ben sounded the alarm, and they all hurried into the coop. Silly birds.
