Arizona Chickens

here's a tidbit for you Nova! ok, so being a pastrychef and all, i do cakes and make buttercream(the REAL buttercream). so this past month i had 2 cake orders to fill. this time i made the buttercream with my eggs, had left the eggs out on the counter(not yet hit the fridge) and it was the most amazing batch i have ever done! i don't normally use my eggs in the cake orders because i am using soooo many and i barely make any money off these cakes anyway, but decided what the hey this last two times. AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

Good news! The neighbors dog shall be relocated soon! I pity the new neighborhood that the dog goes too though, and I pray no more innocent lives are taken. I know many people have opinions on where the blame should lie...but what good will it do? I know I can get mad at the dog, the owner, or both as much as I like..but getting mad does absolutely nothing to protect my flock. Getting rid of the dog? Now that will protect my flock. And that day can't come soon enough! I am quite ready to sleep in my own bed again, sleeping in the back yard in a cot with my flock at night is sure a noisy affair!

Nova, you're funny. You know you're not sleeping out there because of the threat of the dog. You're obsessed like the rest of us. If I knew I wouldn't be poohed on, I'd camp with my birds too

Someone laid their first egg two days ago. It's the middle one. A tad smaller than my EE's egg and much smaller than my Jersey Giants egg. I think it was laid by my RIR as she has been caught in the nest a few times. As a matter of fact, I just saw her go into the nesting box but she only stays in a few minutes. Her sisters follow her in and scratch in the litter in the hen house while she sniffs around in the nest boxes. Hmm...maybe I'll be having a half dozen eggs a day soon rather than 1 or 2. The girls are 22 weeks old.

Did you know that the average age of the eggs sold in grocery stores is about 45 days old?
Thats funny you say that my family was just talking about this last night . And thats why ours taste sooo good because they are fresh ... sometimes still warm from being layed

I live in Far East Mesa, I looking for a couple more chickens,

We are wanting 4 more hens that are laying or getting ready to lay. Looking for:

1-Rhode Island Red
1-silver laced wyandotte
1-Plymouth Rock or Barred Rock
1-Wheaten Ameraucana

I want to spend $8 or less

If you have any of the the chickens listed forsale in the east valley let me know

Thank you
I will ask my neighbors she raise chickens but not sure what kind , but shes got about 100 right now WOW!

Average cost of a laying hen 20.00
Average cost of day old chick 3.50
Average cost of a 3 to 4 week old pullet 8.00 to 10.00

Average time it takes a pullet to start laying eggs 4 to 6 months (sometimes more)
Average cost for food a month for 4 hens 18.00 (or more)
Average food dish 15.00
Average cost of auto waterer 40.00
Average cost of a chicken coop and chicken run 350.00 (cheapiest of cheapo and must build yourself) to 2,000.00 (easily more!)
Other expenses needed to raise and/or care for chickens: Water bill, medicine costs, dead loss (money put into raising but end up dead..I.E. to the neighborhood dog for example), bedding cost (straw or wood shavings), vitamin supplements, the list goes on!

I listed this so you have an idea of what the costs are to the person selling the laying hens. As you can see, 20.00 a hen is a steal of a price! They are losing a lot of money at that price. If you had to raise them yourself, you would be easily several hundreds dollars in the hole. People who sell hens are certainly not in it for the money

Please understand that no one on here is offended with your asking inquiry. We are simply giving you this information for information purposes, that way you can have a better understanding of why the prices are the way they are. Hopefully you will be able to obtain your desired breeds, but beware of the chicken math!
