fishnet1971: Yep - I know, all we have are "Bushes"
lovinlife: We live about 2 hours from Lubbock and about an hour and a half from Plainview. We live between Matador and Childress way out in the middle of nowhere!
Nodaksnakelover: We have cliffs around our ranch and they break up tornados!
Yay! Another BYCer with chickens, guineas, beef cows, and milk cows!!! What breed(s) is Buttercup? We have two Angus x Jersey heifers (born from our Jersey cows) that we're hoping will make good milk cows. We also have two Jerseys (Jenny and Olga) and our original Holstein cross, Buttercup (crossed with what, we have no idea
), and we're milking these twice a day. We got Buttercup three years ago as a very wild nurse cow at the sale barn. She would charge us, and my Dad had to milk her standing up with a large coffee mug to keep from being kicked. Thirty days (sixty milkings) later she finally was safe enough for him to sit down to milk. Now, she's the sweetest thing ever! She'll let you ride her, and when city folk friends want to milk a cow Buttercup's the most dependable choice!
My Dad is driving back from Nevada (business), and currently he's either in the Panhandle or eastern Oklahoma. If you see a silver Dodge duly hauling a trailer, please wave to him, LOL... I'll later explain to him who waved to him!
Quote:
Buttercup & Tiny Tim are both Jerseys X Angus
We've had alot of wild milkcows as well! lol Haha, I doubt I'll see him because we live out in the middle of nowhere and we live about 6 miles from the road!

Well, turns out my Dad drove straight through the night and he got here at 10:20am. He was planning to sleep most the night, but he just wanted to get home. So when I said he was probably in the Panhandle, he was actually near Springfield, MO. He drove all the way from Flagstaff, AZ without sleeping. He left there at 6:30 (8:30 our time), and didn't sleep a wink since. Needless to say, he's napping right now.
How old is Buttercup? When are you planning to breed her? We just put our older Angus x Jersey heifer in with the bull for a October calf (the younger Angus x Jersey is still on a bottle). We're looking forward to see what kind of milker she'll be! This is actually Lizzy, the real sweet calf we raised on a bottle that I mentioned earlier, LOL!
Katy & ranchhand: Right after those pictures were taken I refilled and cleaned out their waterers until they were white again. They have dirt instead of shavings ( which I would preferr to have ) so they kick alot of it into their water -
Cowgirl71: OMGoodness!
He is tough!! I couldn't do that!
Wow -
Um, Buttercup was born last Winter...seems like. Her mother ( Betsy ) died just a few weeks after Buttercup was born. So she was bottle fed up until the point she could eat hay and sweet feed alright. Then a neighbor/friend gave us a calf that the mother wouldn't take so I was bottle feeding both of them then when Betsy died we found a Jersey Cow up in the Amarillo area and she came with 2 calves. They had 4 calves, 2 girls and 2 boys-we got both of the boys. I was feeding 4 calves every morning now -
Then we gave 2 calves to a friend of ours and now we just have Buttercup and Tiny Tim. Buttercup was born last winter so maybe a year old?
Something like that.
Bessy was w/ a bull for 2 months - we're hopeing she is bred!
