I guess there's a double advantage to AI, too, in that a) your hen's don't get destroyed and b) you know 100% for sure who the daddy is.

I suppose it's something that every serious breeder should learn... *sigh* I sure wish there were shows up here. I do hope you'll share a video link...

We weren't able to get pictures or a video this weekend. But at our next show in two weeks, we are planning on taking step by step pics, and a video to post on our websites, since so many serious breeders are interested in it.

I have been told by several Cochin breeders that you should keep the hens and roosters separated for better fertility.

Wow, I didnt feel that the turkey episode was at all like the chicken way. You have to stroke the chicken to get the product at least it just isnt projectile launched LOL!

I agree though that a video would be immensly helpful though I have been able to accomplish it anyway. The problem with keeping the roo with a bunch of hens yes, you know who the daddy is, but knowing who laid what egg is a bit different. You would have to put some food coloring in the birds vent to tell who laid what egg. Of course, some birds you can tell by the shape of their egg once you know your birds well.

Ok, so I didnt read the entire thread yet but thought I should share a quick story about AI......

This weekend at a show, one of the exhibitors showed me how to AI. Rub, rub, lift, squeeze, squirt. that is all. It took him a couple tries to make the 'juice' squirt out and I was getting nervous that I was going to get squirted. He kept saying relax, it doesnt squirt, it just comes out onto the feathers and then you pick it up with an eye dropper. Well, next thing you know...
Rub, rub, rub, rub, lift, squeeze, SQUIRT - all over a guy standing next to us. It shot a couple feet away. We start laughing as this guy is wiping his face to say something to us. OMG!! I was laughing so hard, I was crying. I've been laughing ever since just thinking about it.
So if anyone ever tells you it doesnt squirt, dont listen, stand back anyway.

And anyone who hasnt seen the Dirty Jobs episode with the turkeys and the AI, well, you just dont know what you are missing. Hysterically funny and educational all in one episode. I can watch it over and over (and not just because its Mike Rowe, tho he certainly helps the scenery....).
