I can get those too. but If you have ever had blackeyed peas cooked IN the pod But the pod itself has a distinct flavor that enhanses the peas.... you snap them just like snapped green beans.... the ones that wont snap get shelled.

Deb, as long as I have been in the south I have never seen or heard of anyone cooking blackeyed peas in the pod. Interesting idea. Even if I went to the farmers market to try to find you some, I don't think I could get them to you before they would wilt. They would have to be freshly picked that way.

Now turnip greens on the other had will wilt but the minute you put them in water, they perk back up just like they were just picked ! They are amazing!

Hariimi - see fish in a spicy Libyan tomato sauce for lunch with my son.and yes THE HEAD IS THE BEST PART!
Your soup looks wonderful!

Ron I can't imagine paying that much for frozen blackeyed peas. My sister loves them so much that she buys them in the can and cooks up some pork chops in her cast iron skillet and then removes them and cooks the cans of blackeyed peas in the drippings and let's them cook and get full of flavor and they are awesome! But you should be able to find them cheaper than that even from Walmart online or something. Or I can buy and ship you some! Even shipping should not be that much.

Not that it makes them less expensive, but the cost is for 5 tubs of 11 ounces each. It looks like they are fresh, not frozen.

That would be close to $4.70 per tub.

I bet they can be found at a farmers market though. I might look at the one in Davis this weekend to see if they have them here.

Quote: That would be great! Fresh is always better. But canned are pretty good to. We just usually buy dried and though them in the freezer till we make them. We don't have any farmers markets close here. We would have to drive over 100 miles to one. But I am in a few online gardening groups and a couple will swap things. :)

Yep.... unfortunately I cant walk em.... but the website shows the one that is open right down the street on Wednesday. its small enough I can use my walker and walk and sit and walk and sit.

There used to be a big one the kind that opened at 0-dark thirty down town somewhere that the buyers would go to for restaurants. The kind that has fresh fish as well.... I may ask at the one here in Santee. Or get on board with the local vore groups on meetups.... dig around to see if anyone is growing them.

But seriously I need to grow some of my own... and my son has been expressing an interest but no motivation....

I may just get a planter started and let him "take over" LOL. you know the deal

I would go with dry or frozen before canned. they dont take long to cook. and I have fudged the snaps by using baby green beans snapped in the pot. Not as good but a reasonable substitute.

Unfortunately Canned vegetables have salt added....
