August Hatch-A-Long

Pics
Unnmmnnnnng an egg exploded. I mean I think it did. So gross the smell. I’d assume it was an exploding egg I didn’t smell it earlier and then did smell it and am missing an egg so there we go. I feel like it wouldn’t have smelled this way if she cracked an egg.

And then I didn’t find much evidence. Did she eat it? :sick

Sorry I’m behind in the thread I’ve spent all day getting the roosts done to move everyone so I can get her out of that nest.

:hmm

I wiped a coated egg WITH MY BARE HAND and removed the parts left with my other and so it’s a good thing I’m moving the girls because now I’ll have to burn the whole thing down with my left hand.

I figured she would rub them clean and I’ll wipe them with a towel when I move them this evening? :barnie
So gross!!! (Well there goes my maybe I can put the dead eggs in with my egg eaters to cure them idea :sick)

:sick Bleh, that's the worst! She probably ate it if you don't see any leftovers, that's rough! It's supposed to be best to allow her to shift around and wipe the eggs with her oils. Whatever bacteria was in the egg the others have already been exposed to if the yuck got on them so as gross as it is it's probably best not to wipe them, leaving the protective bloom in place to hopefully keep them safe from the bacteria. I would change out the shavings and wipe out the box though just because of the yuck though!

Humidity jumped to 68 with the chicks arrival! And one is out and chirping up a storm another pip in one of the larger ameraucana eggs, that one has me a little concerned, and the out and chirping girl came from one of the smaller eggs...

Well, cross your fingers!

Moved everyone tonight. The laying hens are fine, roosting away by the time I got out there. I closed the other coop up today so they couldn’t get in.

Maybe 15 minutes before dark I moved mama and eggs. She sat for five minutes and bolted off the eggs, pacing the pen wall. It’s all hers but it’s pretty big. I gave her a box within there, so I locked her in it. I’m concerned the box is still too big but what will be will be. When I could still see she was pacing the box, but not stepping on the eggs yet. From the camera that I can’t really see in the dark it looks like she may be sitting. :fl:fl:fl

Yay! Busy night coming in the incubator!

Good luck! :fl
I hope she calms down so she doesn't try to go back to the stinky box!

Smaller eggs can sometimes hatch a little early. Congrats!

Tomorrow is day 21 for the last of our August eggs. 2 Silkies, a Partridge and a Paint. The partridge was rocking and rolling a little bit ago, literally. Turns out it pipped on the underside and was trying to roll over. I watched for a while, went in to have dinner, and it still hadn’t righted itself when I came back out. I upped the humidity and tried to nudge it over, but it ended up face down again and squawking. So, being a bit trigger happy after the bad hatch, I plucked it out to assess the situation. I peeled off one small piece of shell to and it kicked and wiggled, and hatched in my hand before I could get it back into the incubator.:jumpy See what happens when you hatch right side up, little chick!?! LOL. All seems well, and it went right back into the incubator.

The paint pipped earlier today but isn’t doing anything else yet. I’ve really been wanting a Paint. Fingers crossed for all to go well with its hatch. Awesome spots would just be a bonus :lau
