August Hatch-A-Long

Pics
I locked down a day early on day 17 last time and had tons of rocking and still an on time hatch...so that was 4 days before hatch. I think they can technically start rocking around day 15? Have they started to draw down at all?
yeah draw down and fullness of the egg says could hatch at any time, note to self do not hatch eggs in incubator when your in pain

The alternative to Nutridrench is Polyvisol WITHOUT iron it's a liquid infant vitamin that can be found at most drug stores and some grocery stores.

I do have nutridrench. We just got home from getting feed and grocery shopping. I need to get my little one to bed momentarily and will give it to him. No progress on the last egg, going to take a look at that one as well.
Did some photos of some of the others an hour or so ago. They're so cute.

Any suggestions on how to de sticky the sticky guy? I was wiping him down with Warm paper towel, and that got some off but he is still not fluffing.

Oh no that sounds awful! I’m sorry that you’ve had to cull chicks!!! So so hard!:hugs

I would rather a quick clean end than watch them suffer and slowly die. I only do it once I’m sure that the chick isn’t going to make it. It is the worst part of hatching for me, but necessary sometimes

I can only imagine how difficult that must be. I am sorry.
I haven't had to yet, but if in the future I do how do you do it exactly? I have had once or twice I have thought about it, but it turned out not to be necessary.

On my first hatch I had a few chicks with horribly slipped tendons I couldn’t fix, they were about 4 days or so old when I made the call and thought that cO2 was going to be the kindest way to end it. I used a Tupperware container and some baking soda and vinegar. I will not do that again, although it worked, I think it wasn’t as peaceful as advertised. Now I place the chick on a paper plate holding it in my left hand with its head stretched out and just make one quick clean cut with a skinning knife, the curved belly of the knife makes it almost impossible to screw up.

Day 10 candling of the shipped Buff Laced Polish eggs. I have my first quitter, the very same egg that I had a question mark on since day 3 so I'm not too surprised. The other weak development egg is still trying though! Both were eggs that I was surprised started to develop at all because they were scrambled looking inside.
I saw a lot of movement in all of the remaining eggs so I'm hopeful! :fl
I do think this is going to be my first and last shipped egg hatch though unless I just absolutely can't find them within a few hours drive.

or order in straight run of day old chicks and hope you get a rooster in the bunch so they aren't shipped, one thing i remember when I was learning to hatch they would ask me if they were shipped and if shipped did i let them rest for 24 hours and check to make sure they didn't have a air cell problem

Here’s hoping that they surprise you in a good way!:fl

I allowed them to rest but most of them had detached and saddled air cells of varying severity. I decided to still put them in the incubator because anyone that has seen me in these hatch-a-longs by now probably knows that I can't say no and I at least have to try. :lau

I finally got the guinea brooder partition done and moved the keet that the guinea moms abandoned. I’ve been so worried about how depressed it looked, but I guess it was indeed eating as it’s pooped several times already in the new brooder. Now the keet is pitifully peeping and constantly walking back and forth at the partition, trying to get to the older keets... sigh, is this an improvement? I candled the Singleton egg again, still days to a week away... Older keets are, maybe 3-5 weeks old? And ready to leave this short brooder! The oldest ones can’t stand up tall in the brooder!
