August Hatch-A-Long!

Quote: I write on the egg the date I set it then I write on the calendar the date it's due...I try to keep the ones that are close in date in the same bator if I'm expecting a larger hatch I use one of the larger incubators for hatching but if it's just 6 or 7 I used the mini....that's really fun because it's a clear dome you can see every little movement

All this talk about proper humidity and adding teaspoons of water?? Just as an example of how different each location is...when I need to increase my humidity here in Arizona I have to add like 1/2 a cup of water! And this is during monsoon season, our most humid time of year. It will be interesting incubating in the spring when it's dry.

If I added half a cup of water, my chicks would have to learn to swim! That's the thing about hatching and raising chicks.... It's not a one-size-fits-all. I think that's where some people get frustrated. They follow what someone does that lives in a far different climate than they do, and they have horrible hatches. It's always best to find someone in a climate similar to yours and then tweak it :)

well my hatch for this week is complete out of 8 silver and gold laced polish silkies I put 6 in lock down 5 have hatched plus 1 guinea total for the last 3 days is 11 all except the guinea is shipped so that is a great hatch!! woo hoo!

that's great did you say the breed? don't you love collect all the different beautiful breeds?

Love to! Really we would like to set up breeding pens per breed when we get onto more property in the next few years, this major collection of different breeds is to see which we enjoy the most! This hatch is all Swedish Flower Hens (though there are boys too

). DH loves spangled, jubilee, and mille fluer type color, but not sure how we'll like Orps yet, so not really gonna spend for the Jubilees yet. DH also likes a large, round bird, lol, so the Wyandottes and Orps and Favs really have his attention, he also loves the look of silkies and show girls, but they just aren't tough enough outdoors. It's all about compromise, though he does love the chickies now!
