I’ve hatched chickens and quail but this is my first batch of ducks. First one is questionable the others all have good veins.

I began this batch with 13 eggs, had several early quitters discovered at Day 7 candling. Was down to 10, but discovered another quitter (blood ring) on Day 13 candling. The remaining chicks look very healthy. It's so neat to watch them dance around when the light hits them during candling. So eager to see which color(s) this new batch of chicks will be :) One week to wait!

Thank you! My pictures are in the quote in post #5, above. Any feedback appreciated!

Are you turning your egg a bit while you candle? Sometime the embroil can develop on the opposite side of the egg. I was thinking that I was seeing a faint start of the veins on the right side of #8 in your picture.

I like seeing them dance around in there too, because it shows that they are alive. The reason why they are doing that though, is that they are trying to get away from the bright light, so don't keep it on them for long.

Hi :)

I set my eggs July 13th. Tomorrow is lock down, eggs go out to the broody girl to finish, and hatch should be in the beginning of August.

I have 6 eggs, from @BlueBaby
so the same mixes. I'm using a Hova Bator styro with auto turner and fan.
I can't wait to see them! Mine don't go into lockdown until 8/9 but tonight I am candling them. It's day 8 so I will try to get a good pic after dark and post it! I'll let you know if we have any quitters.

I don't want to stress the little ones out. I just candle long enough to confirm viability, and although I'm delighted to see movement, I just look for a few brief seconds. I candled every few days last batch, and since I had less than ideal results with those eggs, I wonder if I added stress by candling too often. I'm only candling on Day 7, 13, and day of lockdown this time.

I have a broody Nankin setting eleven eggs out in the coop. She started about ten days ago with seven, so we'll see how many actually hatch. She abandoned a clutch of eight several weeks ago, so I moved them into the bator ... and the auto-turner promptly broke down. We only got one live hatch out of that bunch - poor baby! Piggy has been diligent, this time, so hopefully we'll get a better hatch rate, this time. Fingers crossed!
