I have a broody Nankin setting eleven eggs out in the coop. She started about ten days ago with seven, so we'll see how many actually hatch. She abandoned a clutch of eight several weeks ago, so I moved them into the bator ... and the auto-turner promptly broke down. We only got one live hatch out of that bunch - poor baby! Piggy has been diligent, this time, so hopefully we'll get a better hatch rate, this time. Fingers crossed!

I have a turner but I didn't use it last time I hatched, and not using it this time neither. I have my eggs in the incubator sitting in egg cartons that I tore the lid's off of, and poked a hole in the bottom of each cup of it. Last time I did this, I had set only 6 eggs and all 6 of those eggs hatched! I had 5 pullets and 1 cockerel that time!

I don't want to stress the little ones out. I just candle long enough to confirm viability, and although I'm delighted to see movement, I just look for a few brief seconds. I candled every few days last batch, and since I had less than ideal results with those eggs, I wonder if I added stress by candling too often. I'm only candling on Day 7, 13, and day of lockdown this time.

Yes, too much handling isn't very good for them. I candle mine on days 5, 10, and 18, then comes lock-down, increase humidity and let them do their thing.

Mine are under a broody who abandoned her first clutch after just a few days, so I'm not touching these until she says she's done! Once she's up and about, we'll candle what's left and maybe put a few in the 'bator, just in case. We did that with the last hatch and got more babies!

Rosie the hen has eaten one of the eggs she is supposed to be hatching! She has been sitting on them for two days. Could it be that the egg she ate was no good, and she ate it instead of pushing it out of the nest? Or should I give her some extra protein? What about a boiled, mashed egg (not one of the fertile ones!)? I'd be glad of any advice!

It could be that it wasn't fertile or could have been bad. Maybe it broke accidentally and she cleaned up the mess. If it happens here I will wait to see if it happens again and go from there.

I just joined byc! I have a slightly staggered hatch (3 days apart) due to start hatching end of next week because I like to live on the edge and school starting chaos lines right up with that

:frowHi :welcome

The start of school is a great time to live on the edge :gigGood luck with your hatch.
