Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

I'm not sure what the average age is for that breed to start laying, but Wyandotte are considered slow starters and mine usually go into lay at 16-20 weeks.

Golly, I've been reading and people are talking about their chickens being 7- 8 months old and not yet laying. I've no clue... Maybe it's closer than I think.

That depends largely on breed and at what time of the year they were hatched. If they were hatching now , then by the time they were approaching maturity we would be heading into the cooler months and that , along with shorter hours of sunlight , can stall them.

or..... could be that your landlord will be thinking to put in some aircon, or ceiling fans.  Shut all the windows before she comes.  (cackling evil plotter laugh)   (seriously though, I don't know how anyone could survive in queensland without aircon/fans.

We got to 42.8c here today and current temp is still 39c. No air-con in this house and i don't rent. Just ceiling fans that blow the hot air around.

Thanks, well I'll just have to wait and see what happens with them. I thought I might get an egg around easter time, but maybe it'll be before that....

Some of my chicks started laying at 14 weeks, others have waited till they are 46 weeks old. They are all different. So many things affect it. Ones hatched late November seem to start laying quickest, while may hatched usually don't start till December/jan

The current chicks include some from eggs layed by chicks hatched in sepetember, and at the same time one of our hens hatched in April only started laying this week.

hmmm thanks. I don't really care when they do it, I was just thinking I'd like to have them in with the other girls before they start laying, rather than trying to shift them when they've got "their" nest. If they go in with the others while they are still little, it might be less of an upheaval/adjustment for them?

I've no idea what i've done with my camera....I hope I haven't left it outside and wrecked it. The rash seemed to be a bit bigger(ie protruding more at the back) today. It's also red on the jawline (is this where a wattle grows from?) and Marcy's ears (or what I think are her ears) are also red. They still seem perfectly well, no signs of distress or anything.
