Nic the diamond dove :)

I have read so much about different breeds of chickens and different colour eggs they lay and decided to add two more hens to my flock. I am allowed 6 and currently have 4.
I was promised an easter egger hen a few months ago by one guy and still waiting, hoping to get one eventually. If not will have to look elsewhere.
I also want one brown egg layer.
I found these breeds lay dark brown eggs:
Barnevelder
Marans
Penedesenca
Welsumer

I know some of you have marans, anybody has any of the other breeds?
What are marans like when housed with other breeds? I have ISA brown, leghorn and two australorps.
If I don't manage to get the hens I will be trying to source some fertile eggs in spring (have incubator).
What are EE like when mixed with others?

Alas, I own 16 birds (12 aviary breeding budgies plus 2 pet budgies and 2 pet cockatiels) plus 4 chickens (more to come in spring ;)

My little 9 month old silkie has gone broody again. Is it crazy to consider letting her hatch a couple of eggs? Ed hasn't been gone long so should still be fertile. They are both partridge so could get a cute little sizzle.

Knowing my luck I'd get a couple of roosters though wouldn't I - sigh.

How did I do that lol

Haha, I bet you're on a laptop and bumped the touchpad :p

I'm in latr
Ruby, whereabouts in Victoria are you? There are a few Facebook groups that are great for answering questions and finding birds :)[/quLatrobe Valley, after I posted that question I went searching, found a few fb pages and a couple of breeders, one that will post a dozen eggs for $50, now I have to look into incubation, not really wanting to buy one, but not sure about the DIY. Also I don't want 12 chickens lol I'm sure I wouldn't get 12 out of 12 but if I did, I'd be little bit screwed

I'm in Latrobe valley too.
I have a few aracaunas in the incubator. I'm not too confident in this hatch but if all goes well, I'll have a couple chicks to sell.

Yeah he Is a black copper maran and booster is his name. Booster the rooster lol. He may be kinda past his time , I have only ever kept him as a pet so I'm not to fussed. He is probably older than 6 as he was a full grown rooster when I got him but I have had him 6 years next week.
Oh O.K, he is doing well then. Good on him.
Happy to answer any quail questions Luke, I love them and I think they are really worth keeping. Quiet, productive (return in eggs for the food eaten is higher than chickens), and just google health benefits of the little eggs!
Great, thanks. This is if we even get them.
I will have to show my sister what you said, convince her more.

VEry pretty.
I have a family of butcher birds around my house. Do you reckon they will attack the doves?
Ahhh henny penny's. Silkies, they're so dam fluffy!

and cluckcluckluke - yes. That was just for the first day. I've changed it to my real female 16 week old Silkie: Penny :)

Oh, O.K I have seen it before and used it for a Gumtree add. Was just curious. Love your silkies.
