Crowing
Am wondering the same appps. I only have 3 chickens - one not laying at all ( for 2 months - Mandy Welsummer while regrowing feathers after a long moult ) .... Mindy Araucana in a separate run has gone broody - is still producing eggs but for how long is the question ?, and Molly RIR is still laying but is losing a feather here and there, so could be going into a summer moult. Which ultimately means probably no eggs at all for a while. I do know that Mindy's broodiness has upset the other two chooks no end. They are separated from Mindy ( who is NOT popular with the big girls ) .... but they fuss and worry at the fence when Mindy is locked out of her coop with her food and water outside too, which is one of my ideas to try and get her over her broodiness. Nothing seems to be working too well - as it is continally intermittent rain here, day after day at which time I am outside putting Mindy back in her coop ( she loves getting saturated ). We have small bursts of sunshine, which they don't get enough of anyway - a massive oak tree in full leaf shades their runs. .Do you guys find that with all your layers? Mine seem to go in waves, 5-6 eggs for a week and a bit then a couple of weeks of 1-2 eggs. Ive been surprised its not been a more consistent laying thing, wth 7 chooks I thought we would be giving them away we would have so many but nope, now and then I even have to buy a box.
I do wonder if the broodiness is affecting it. And I dont mean the obvious they stop laying when they are broody, I mean everyone seems to stop. We were going really well then Al who is a cranky thing with everyone else at the best of times got broody and suddenly I think nobody wanted to go in the box with her to lay LOL Ive not had more then 2-3 eggs since but it was only one broody hen not 3 or 4 but thats how much the egg production dropped by.
At times I wonder about keeping chickens.

Cheers ......... AB
