I don't know if this is true or not, a man at the market told me if my hens stop laying then give them a feed of chillis and they'll all start laying again. I do know they like chillis because I had two bushes growing in my garden before I got my chooks and they ate them all.

Hello there again everyone. I'm a bit worried about my hens. They have stopped laying and one of them will occasionally lay an egg with a shell so thin it is almost clear. It breaks straight away. My girls get plenty of shell grit and layer pellets.

You can buy calcium carbonate in bags at pet shops. It should be on free take , under cover . She'll grit is for digestion but calcium carbonate ( crushed oyster )
Is a calcium supplement . It's important to get their calcium levels up as sooner or later one of those soft shelled eggs will get caught up in the system .
A pullet releases the exact same amount of calcium to coat each and every egg as it comes down the chamber. So if the egg is over sized the shell will be thinner, increasing the likely hood of breakage and egg binding. Linoleic acid enhances egg size and is added to most feeds but does not increase the amount of calcium.

You can also feed the eggshells back to her for a little extra calcium
Probably not helpful at the moment till the shells harden again
I just crush them up after we use them and feed it to the girls
They love it

Found two little eggs in Mia and Bella's roost this morning
I was pretty excited when I saw them because I didn't expect them to lay so soon!

Yay, seems they are settling in very well!

Found a little egg myself out on the lawn outside the chook run.

What do you think, fart egg or wild bird? It's actually quite heavy for its size so now wondering if it might have been blown out of a nest in the wind last night

My guess would be fart egg.

I have heard of chillis being used when they are moulting to help feather in better.

Lol it's that time of year for Magpie's. There's one that harasses me at the gate to one of the paddocks. It's been like that for at least the last four years around this time. He's got me a few times and drawn blood. People ask me why don't I just shoot him, but he only bothers me for about a month and he's only doing his job.

Up to seventeen chicks, and I don't think they have any lice. I haven't seen any.

I went to Murrembateman field day yesterday and was tempted by some Wynadotte chicks (about the same age), but I think I'll just worry about these for now.
