Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

This is the one I've got. My plastic surgeon gave it to me when I had stitches. But if you've got the Terramycin use it. It is the most valuable wound care item in my first aid box.

Ooof. We ended up having to go the surgery route. The wound went all the way through her toe from front to back and actually goes through the area under her claw as well (such that both scabs and one that I couldn't see under her toenail all joined in the centre of an infection). I don't have any triple antibiotic cream but I am going to hunt some down tomorrow because with her toenail right up against the wound I'm going to have a heck of a time keeping it clean. She had an ENORMOUS hole in her toe by the time we were done and I wasn't thoroughly certain that I got all of the infected and necrotic tissue out. I squeezed until the core became visible and pulled it out with tweezers and pulled some of the cheesy tissue out. I more or less stopped when the toe began to bleed freely, which I usually consider a good sign.

I flushed it (it's a three-sided hole that joins in the middle of her toe) first with saline, then isopropyl alcohol, then cleaned it with hydrogen peroxide and sprayed it thoroughly with terramycin. I wrapped it in 1/4" gauze and soaked that with tea tree oil (for its antiseptic properties) before wrapping most of her foot (far more securely this time) with VetWrap.

I can say with some certainty that I did not get anything LIKE all of it last time. The wound was much more extensive than I'd initially thought and the infection just continued to spread through her toe. I'm definitely a lot more certain this time and she will be staying inside until I am sure that the infection is eradicated.

In the meantime, considering the extent and coverage of the wound, I'm researching necessary tools I'll need in case I have to amputate the last knuckle of the toe. I'm also going to obtain smaller scalpel blades as the ones I have are really far too large for such a small area.

Wow! Well done for persisting. With a wound like that she might need antibiotics. I know some aren't a fan of them but really it sounds like she's going to need help with an infection that extensive.

Which antibiotics would you suggest? I've got a few but they're mostly designed for respiratory infections.

Not sure as I would usually just run a girl to the vet 2mins down the road. They only charge $5 to see a chicken plus cost of injection. All under $10 generally. I assume that's not a possibility for you. Something broad spectrum is probably best. Suggestions anyone?

My local vet charges me $80 for the consultation and then is more likely to give me colloidal silver than antibiotics. He's also the pat-on-the-head, "Let the professionals handle this, sweetheart." type.

So many vets are so unhelpful!!! Probably go with the triple antibiotic cream as suggested for now. Where are you located?

Indeed. I usually onto go to him for my pets' vaccinations. I've ordered the antibiotic ointment cream but it likely won't be here for nearly a week. I'll have to just live with terramycin spray in the meantime. I'm located in Gunning, NSW. I'll put the word out on the local Facebook groups to see if anyone has any triple antibiotic ointment - that might just work.

For now...I go make sleeps...zzzz.

morning everyone...well was busy doing work till 3am....and its been like that for 3 days..finally a day to relax...not quite tho..have to change out the peas place and the chicken coop and clean the incubator...put wire up on the coops and install doors and plastic...I guess not having a day off

Poor girl. Sounds like you did a great job though. I wouldn't worry too much about the triple antibiotic, the Terramycin will do the job. Give a real good spray from every angle each time you expose the wound site . Hydrogen peroxide is great for initial treatment but further application now will only inhibit the healing system.
You can give her a little aspirin for pain , although it's not in their nature to exhibit pain, ( it's a predator thing ) that foot must be throbbing.
:fl for your girl. I have an avian vet, he is in fact one of your fellow countrymen , but he charges like a wounded bull.
You did good.

Some of my replies are going to be a bit dated now but working through heaps of pages (approx 25) and typing bits and pieces on a draft Word Doc to paste

AussieChics my chicks chest bump regardless of gender. Watching carefully I can see that the girls have not been quite as enthusiastic about it but they still do it. My gals like to hang on the deck with their people; gives a whole new meaning to poop deck! Your chicks are definitely getting bigger and very adorable. 7/9 sucks!

Fancy Toughy is beautiful! Commiserations on your loss; the Crows here are a definite concern. Loved the pictures!

tandykins congrats on the beautiful bubs! I am sorry to read about your loss though. Your gals sure do sound like they are giving you a crash course in broodies and what can go wrong. Excellent job on the poop catcher!

beautiful pictures!

Steampunked I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. My FIL lost his companion of 14 years a couple of days ago and we are all in mourning, along with the small town in which he lives, everyone knew and loved Inu .. it does suck!

ChristieB I am sorry to read of your loss also; the heat at the moment is definitely a concern. My Frizzle, LuLu, was not coping well yesterday but we managed to keep her cool; now to do it all again today!

Read heaps, learnt heaps and stored away heaps of useful information for later

And, after all that, I got nothing really to report.
I did stumble across the best broody-breaker …. Cilla!
After a couple of weeks of wanting to be broody Blondie was joined by Cilla in GodCilla mode! Two days of having to put up with Cilla in an adjoining nest box and Blondie was broken!

Two more days of locking Cilla out of the nest box and Cilla was broken.

For I don’t know how long, this is the first time that I do not have any broodies! Peace reigns! Blondie has even started squatting again but I think she may also be coming into a molt, dropping a few feathers here and there.

Other than that, I am melting! Current temps and humidity is not nice for humans, puddy cats or chickens; the only ones not complaining are the gold fish!
