Good morning Folks

Steampunked congrats on the commencement of the new coop! Ash is right in that “you will always need more room”.

With this hatch and the hopeful possibility of keeping two gals, we are now looking at our 4th round of renovations in 2 years in the form of a run extension.

We have invested too much and done too much to our current set up to just give up on it and start again but if the opportunity to start again comes along, we will definitely just ‘go big’ to start with!

One good thing with the little extensions here and there is that rather than one big run, there are lots of little nooks and crannies and opportunity for someone to take a time out from the rest of the flock if they need it. It also gives us the opportunity to easily segregate if we need to.

satay thanks for pointing out the 2-year thing, I missed that also

RodneyRooster thanks. I spent some time yesterday checking out the bubs, feathers etc .. it is very early days but I am thinking one of the whites may be frizzled and also the little buff.

Being the weekend, I am looking forward to spending some time with them. While I was stalking them yesterday, I noted that the little buff also has 5 toes but does not look like a Silkie, so maybe some other 5 toed breed in the mix, or maybe just a Silkie X. I love the fact that they are from a mixed bantam pen; I don’t show or breed so it is fun to see what surprises you get.

On the subject of height, Mum is 5’10” and Dad is 6’5”. We definitely inherited the height gene, my eldest sister is 5’10”, next is 6’ and I am 5’11”; my son is 6’5” and has size 17 feet!

Being tall has it’s advantages but being a tall woman can be a bit of pain; while you do get picked first when netball or basketball teams are being picked

; you tend to stand out in a crowd which can severely mess with your image perceptions. Makes finding a partner kinda tricky also; no one gives a second look when they see a taller man with a shorter female but I believe a taller woman with a shorter man tends to draw that second look? I could be wrong. Don’t even start me on the drawbacks of buying clothes!

I am not complaining, it is what it is .. just saying that being tall is not always an advantage.

On the male/female pet gender; I have had both male and female dogs and cats and in my experience, I have found female dogs to be more ‘cuddly’ than the males and the total opposite in cats with the males being ‘cuddly’ and the females, while still so totally loveable, a bit more on the aloof side.

Talking cats, today is not going to be a good one for Chimee, she has a 9am appointment at the Vet’s for vaccination, worming and wellness check. The poor little thing hates it but it needs to be done. I feel sorry for her because she is in such a good mood this morning, running around and playing with her toys, she has no idea what is coming

Yay! Cant get too excited yet but YAY! If they are frizzles lol. I always hated being short for clothes as i cant buy a pair of pants, dress or skirt without having to hem them but since managing a dress store i now know its harder for tall women, at least we CAN hem clothes, its much more difficult to add material.

On the subject of men ur probably right i think there are a lot of men out there that just wouldnt think of having a woman taller than them, but of course if theyre not gonna be with u over height theyre not worthy of u! I have a couple of very tall girlfriends and the thing they hate most is not being able to wear heels when they go out with their partners lol.

Enjoy stalking ur babies @Teila, i wont be home all day but will spending all of tomorrow stalking while my new girls get introduced properly.

Had a quick look at the competitions, I suppose theyre all only open to UK and canada residents? If so they need to branch out into our area next yr! :-D by then ill be a pro lol.. of taking photos of eggs i mean HAHA

This is where I wish I could really talk chickenese! Trying to explain to Cilla and the Nuggets that I need to lock then in the nest, high and dry is not easy:

There are places she can shelter on the ground but as you have seen from previous pics, they might flood! OK, they probably do not like me much at the moment because we had to rustle them in a hurry and they are locked in the nest but they are high and dry with no chance of drowning!

I hope it's not too bad a storm. I was just considering whether to let mine out for their afternoon graze as the storm hasn't reached here yet. I'm leaning towards no. While I'm stuck with the books, my daughter has just headed out on an hours horse ride with a bunch of girls. I hope the storm misses them!

It's a party ride so a whole bunch of inexperienced nine year old riders.

Hey cwrite it is going right over the top of us .. really heavy rain and the thunder is awesome! So glad I got the Nuggets safe in time. According to the BOM Rochedale got 66mm of rain in 30 mins!

If it looks like it is heading your way, definitely lean towards No; it is a doozy!

I hope it misses the party ride also

Yep - they can stay in. We have thunder now and it's gotten dark. Hopefully it will miss Kurwongbah or be a lot lighter by the time it gets here. 66mm in 30 minutes is a crazy amount of rain Teila.

Before the storm, I had another photo shoot with the Nuggets so seeing as I am now stuck inside, thought I would share
big_smile.png

This first pic is from December last year when we set up a temporary run attached to the Broody Jail to give them a bit more room. That is Cilla in the pic; in jail! I actually broke her that time but to give you an idea of how often she goes broody, here we are in March and she has bubbies! lol.

It is not covered as it was temporary and just an added area for her to have a wander when I was outside. This is where we are doing our latest renovations, taking away the temp fencing and enclosing it properly to extend their covered run area; then it can be used all the time. So we will have a run out the front, coops in the middle and then run out the back also. It will be able to be access all areas, or locked down for a broody and bubs.

Anyways, at the moment it is doubling as a little extra room for Cilla and the Nuggets but, of course, only when I am outside with them, chasing away the Crows!. Today I had to put a wire skirt around the bottom cos the cheeky little munchkins just walk through the gap in the wire!

This one (below) I am thinking Frizzle, but early days yet!

Managed to get all five in the same photo; not an easy feat as they never stay in one spot longer than two seconds!

Aww such gorgeous little pics! My chickens LOVED all kinds of melons over summer too. Think the first quarter watermelon lasted 2 and a half days and the next weeks theyd be lucky to last 25 mins! Took to them very quickly :) Wow i hope ur both tucked away with ur emergency plans, radios and batteries all sorted! Dont know what category it is or anything but that amount of rain sure sounds big! @Teila ur lot sound nice and snug :) Well i dont wanna rub it in or anything but were having beautiful weather here in SA which is great news for me as ive just popped my new girls on the roost with the others! Will get up before the chooks (as usual since i got the newbies *yawn*) in the morning and basically wait and see.. Fingers crossed for me that they all cope with the addition! Have got my spray bottle filled and at the ready out the back as advised and alarm clock set :) no doubt will be posting here like crazy in the morning! Goodluck with the storms tonight guys!

@Teila I'm so glad Snowy is over her broodiness. Those chicks are so cute its hard to resist the urge - just one more hatch.

My little rider is asleep now and missed the rain which I''m enjoying hearing now that we are all inside and cosy. I had several loud complaints voiced over the missed grazing time, but the advantage of it getting so dark is that they all went to bed early.
