Finally my never ending hatch has finished with 4 Belgians from my own iddy biddy belg and a couple of marans and a some quails Time to clean the bator ready for when the new eggs arrive.

Hey RodneyRooster I am pleased Miss Vonte is staying put!

I have read many stories of successfully hatching with two broodys and an equal amount of not so successful hatches.

I have a friend whose two broody’s co-parented their hatches at the same time but another friend who lost a couple of chicks in a turf war between the two broody’s 

I believe a lot depends on your flock and your set up.  Knowing my flock and my set up, I would not risk it but that does not mean it is not worth a try .. if you do decide to go down that path, I would ensure I had a Plan B ready to go if it does not work out.

I keep mine separated. Even when they start getting out and about I have had babies pecked by squabbling mums and jealous onlookers. Depends a lot I think on who is the top of the pecking order. Nobody messed with my departed top girl Harriet and her babies - but when poor Splash lower down the chain had a clutch her bubs weren't so lucky. Not hurt, but not nice.ever since then I play it safe. It's more when they hatch I worry about.

Thanks! Might have to work on securing that other chook yard much sooner than expected then! Wasnt gonna worry about it til autumn haha. If another does go broody I will make sure I put her elsewhere to Miss Vonte. Thanks for the detailed advice.

I have no idea about the treated pine convo, only what ive read online. I always go for the natural option tho. I guess all the posts weve used for our fencing is treated and they hang around them without any issues

This is the set-up I used for Blondie when Tina was already camped out in my broody pen. I know a few of us have those little hutches and they are wonderful!

I do not have a predator problem and was able to lock the hutch section at night but give her room to move if she wanted to during the day. She raised her couple of chicks in there without a problem and being attached to the run, separated by wire, was able to see her flock mates:

Fancy I hope you are on the mend soon, I had influenza a last year and it was awful, being pregnant my doctor erred on the side of caution and gave me antibiotics right away. the next day I went into prem labour and had to have a c section, I tell you what, a fresh incision with uncontrollable coughing, I felt like I was going to pop my stitches and my insides fall out. Horrible! I don't envy you in the slightest.
Broodies, it's the season alright!!
Having a hen raise them is definitely better, my plan is to give the chicks that hatch in the incubator to Fleur as they hatch, infact once I've candled on Sunday, if theres any duds under her I'll swap them right away, let her do all the work. I don't know about co broodies in the same pen, I've heard it both ways too.

Treated pine. I thought it wasn't arsenic treated any more too but I don't know much at all about, I'd still be cautious with it personally.

On the subject of perches. The ones I have wre only supposed to be temporary. I have a Norfolk pine in the back yard that I want to remove. The branches look perfect for roosts, the question is, should I let it age first or can I put it in green?

@ChristieB thank u for your input also. That sounds like a horrible birthing/sickness experience. Ihope u had a healthy baby and can look back on it and think wow, I can do anything

Well im very proud of my broody. Just had a big cufuffle! The inevitable event of rodney jumping over to my dogs side of the fence. So glad i was home! Bit of a mad and hilarious scene me trying to catch him while he was skitzing it and running away as the dog was right next to me trying to catch him too! Anyway lots of shrieking from the other chooks worried about him big drama situation. Miss Vonte didnt move a muscle think shes gonna be an awesome mum

Hopefully rodneys learnt his lesson, its the only place he can get out of the fence i think but we figured the dog would deter him soon enough. Yep, sure has! Lol

Zeus my border collie cross will try to round up and hens etc that get out of the layer pens..The only problem he has is he isn't very good at it and will usually send them in the wrong direction. Thor our mastiff cross loves to kiss everything but if he actualy had to round up anything that would be far to much like hard work .

Treated pine is not treated with arsenic compounds these days.  It is perfectly safe.

I must be the only one that did not know that. What do they treat it with now Ash?
