Now I can't find the posts in search, can't remember which terms I used. I remember one by eggcessive where they said that they used to be against the use of tylenol for chickens but came across a couple studies that changed their mind. But now all I can find is stuff from @Ponypoor 😆

I have no idea about the syringe thing. All this stuff goes over my head
No worries. Think you will be OK giving 0.5ml and I think you could give it twice a day if you needed to.

I just gave her a dose. She was stinky about it, dad had to help hold her head still 😆 but she's been more alert and a little more herself today already before the tylenol anyway. She's being spoiled and she's loving it. Aliss has never been cuddly but right now she's a lap chicken and she's not unhappy about it!

I hope she isn't knocked down in the pecking order after all this. She's such a good top hen, fair and nonaggressive, and attentive.

Just a half hour after one dose of the tylenol she's putting weight on the leg and walking much better. She's so bright and alert today compared to the past 2 days! I'll let her stretch her legs for a bit before bringing her back in the garage. It's business as usual for the others, they're not picking on Aliss and are still respecting her personal bubble so I think her standing is safe.

I’m having a really rough week. Spent several hours at the ER Tuesday night and then again on Wednesday. Thought I might have another DVT Tuesday but tests were negative. Wednesday had cardiac symptoms but all those tests were normal range. Still having numbness/tingling/burning pain in both hands and forearms, which has started shooting all the way up behind my shoulder blade on the right side. It was bad enough when I was at the hospital they gave me morphine and a muscle relaxer.

Seeing a cardiologist on Tuesday to make sure they can’t find anything wrong, and a neurosurgeon on Friday. Then my PCP the Tuesday after that.

Can barely sleep. Not even taking 10mg Hydrocodone. Really hope they figure something out soon.

Falling apart in my old age tax, including a fluffy butt.

The heart was for all the lovely chooks...these are for you: :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs :hugs

I hope they are able to figure it out - I think it is even worse when we don't know - as you can't really make a plan of action - which is even more frustrating on top of the horrible symptoms you are having!

Nope he has to lay it on the ground by the front door, takes his photo then picks it up and gives it to me!!! Makes me howl with laughter every time. Poor fella - wonder what he thinks of the silliness of that.
That is all well and good when the picture is of YOUR doorstep! There is a house with the same number as ours at the other end of our street (different town, mind you - we are each at the beginning of our street in our respective towns). I have gotten the 'delivered' notice (with a picture), read the headline in email without opening the email, and was excited it finally came....only to get home from work and no package! I open the email, open the pic...hmmmmm, might be my package, but , nope, not my house! Truck on down to my 'distant neighbor'...'Did you by any chance get a package today that wasn't yours?' "Yeah, were going to drop it by this weekend...here, let me get it for you'

🙄:lau🙄:lau🙄

Tax for off topic:

I love watching Mommas with chicks! And always get a chuckle at the 'free warm ride' when they hop up on mom.🥰

Adorable!!!
I need to dig it up, but I once got a picture from FedEx marked ‘delivered’. It was of a picture of a parcel at the base of a tree. No distinguishing surroundings. Just other trees. I live in a clearing in the woods. Could be anywhere!

Can you link me to the posts that say infant Tylenol? I have only found ones that say don't give Tylenol!

And do you understand why the package says 2FL OZ (59ml) when your picture shows a 5ml syringe? Is there anything else on the package to suggest what that is about?!

That said, I have found 2 legit scientific studies that give some indication of safe dose for a 3lb (=1.4kg) chicken.
I won't fuss with posting them but can do so if you want. They basically are reassuring that you wouldn't be endangering your hen with that product even if you gave her all of it (don't do that!).

I also found that our Fluffy Butt friend @Ponypoor has used infant Tylenol on her silkies and believes the dose is 10mg/kg. I don't have a source for that other than Pony - but real world experience is good so let's go with that!
At 10mg/kg you want to give your 1.4kg hen 14mg of the drug. I think Pony gives it twice a day.
With the product you have, that would be about 0.5ml (160mg in 5ml so 16mg in 0.5ml).
We are well in the safe zone based on the studies I found, so don't be too nervous.
Use your smaller syringe and give the 0.5ml which is conveniently the first marking on the syringe.
But as I said, we are well in the safe zone so don't worry if it goes a shade over or under.
Good luck!
@Ponypoor or @bgmathteach or anyone - do please check my math and my thinking here - I have never used this and am just trying to help out TOMTE.
Yes, with rounding - 14 mg is the correct dosage, and 16 mg (.5 ml) should be within the reasonable margin or error/safe zone. So, yes, give 0.5 ml to Aliss.

?Are you sure she is 3 lbs? Isn't she part Marans? I would have expected her to weigh more! That said.......if anything, and she does weigh more, then you would be under dosing her, which is safe...and would still give her some pain relief....under dosing in this situation is far better than overdosing.

I completely agree that, in this case, Aspirin would NOT be a good alternative, as you don't know about internal injuries, and risk bleeding. I personally would, whenever you have a bit of extra money, get some liquid children's Ibuprofen to have on hand. It is both a pain reliever and an anti-inflammatory (unlike tylenol/acetaminophen which works differently on pain, and is not an anti-inflammatory)
@RoyalChick or @Ponypoor - feel free to correct me - but this is my understanding.

I didn't want to get aspirin in case of internal injuries. I wish I'd known ibuprofen would be better, I dont have enough money to get ibuprofen instead... Although in a lot of threads in the emergency forum, people suggest infants tylenol for pain. So I dunno

Here's the syringe

This is the Tylenol I use:

Dosage for a chicken is 10mg/kg

This box states that in every 1ml of liquid there is 80mg.

That would mean there will be 20mg of medicine in 0.25ml (one quarter of a ml) syringe.

4, quarter ml is 1 whole ml.

Remember I wrote 1ml has 80mg of medicine.
image.jpg

The syringe I have is marked for 0.25ml (one quarter of a ml), since a small chicken is about 2kg then 0.25ml would be your dose. For a 4 kg chook use 0.5ml.
image.jpg

Ibuprofen is like aspirin, and can cause gastrointestinal issues and bleeding like aspirin. I don’t know the dose for ibuprofen with chickens. But I do know there is literature out there for this.

but since it’s been a couple days I would say any risk for bleeding should be past, so you can try any pain med.

Thanks @Ponypoor - TOMTE’s product is 160mg in 5mls. I think that is a crazy way to show concentration. At least give it per ml like yours does!

I have no idea what mix she is. She was apparently (I wasn't there) sold as a BSL, idk what the hatchery uses to produce their BSL (don't remember which hatchery FF&H gets their chicks from either. I asked @SimpleJenn once but I forgot what she told me  ) or if she was even in the right bin in the first place.

She is much less heavy than the other BSL, Esme. I haven't weighed Esme recently but I expect her to be at least 5lbs.

That being said, our bathroom scale is like, almost 20 years old, and it took a few tries to even get it to work. But I tested it a few times and each time it came out with Aliss around 3lbs.
