Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Hi
I'm a bit weird in that I don't want the meat or eggs (vegan) so I just like the company. I find them great companions :) What I mean is oldies are fine!
I would gumtree them for sure. I can only take 1-2 because I live in a rental.
Sorry. I have some leg mites if you notice my earlier post. I will let you know if when have it under control. If you still want some of my chooks. I don't know if they all have it but they are in the same coops so I will have to say there is a strong possibility they do it may not be noticeable. But I only know what I've read and its conflicting.

If anyone is incubating at the moment come join my thread The Incubators Thread! Im hoping to get this thread going but not as fast paced as the Incubating with Friends one!

Oh...... I have just found a couple of chooks with scaly leg mite.  So tomorrow I will have to get some vegetable oil and try and treat everyone. I didn't know what it was and I notice 1 out of the 60 is bad there are 2 or 3 I can just notice some lumpiness. But am I right in thinking I should put oil on all their feet. I am so glad I kept them away from my girls and far away from my babies.

Generic Vicks is very effective. I've found that oils aren't viscous enough and have to be applied several times. Vicks 1-2 max. The camphor is also very soothing.

You only need apply the Vicks before they go, it will deal with it. It smothers them like Vaseline and has the added benefit of soothing.

OK. Thanks. Yeah, my loner hen presently has a bad case of NF Mites, so I'm in the process of throwing out all of the bedding and cleaning the coop. These mites things are horrible. In my forum reading RE mites I read a lot about the leg mites, and it seems to be that a warm soak, with a nail brush to clean off any dry scales. Then an oil coat, followed by Vaseline or something thick. The Vicks idea seems good!
It must be so hard with 60 chickens, when something like that happens.

yes heading out there now. Though I have a few different runs so I will just plod through. They don't all have it so I'm not sure whether to just do them anyway. Good luck with yours.

Ah, the simple pleasures

Just finished my first trial at making my own chilli powder. It is kinda nice to do it all yourself .. grew and harvested the chilli's, dehydrated them and crushed them with a mortar and pestle. These were early bloomers and only a few but it looks like we are going to get a good crop of Caysans and Habanero's this year. With last year's crop still in the freezer, being able to turn this year's into powder will be good
