Australorp Pride! Let's see those pics!

Belladonna2.jpg

This is our black australorp, Belladonna. She follows me around the run, walking around my legs and generally getting in the way, but she's definitely the most curious and bravest of all our hens

A racoon got my rooster and my only blue hen. So I guess I'll be keeping these. I don't think the easter egger laid them. She's white. But I really don't know for sure.

I'm sorry that you lost them. I hope that you fixed things or that raccoon will be back to get the rest of your flock. I have a splash Australorp that just started laying eggs not too long ago, so I am waiting for her eggs to get bigger so that I can hatch from her. She had my Blue Australorp roo over her, so the chicks that hatch will either be blue or splash in color.

I would like to have splash australorps but don't really know where I would find them though, having a specific minimum also counts. I think they sell black australorps just about everywhere. Beautiful eggs too.;)View attachment 1288731

Mine are the breeders type and aren't from a hatchery, although I have heard that Pruitts hatchery in New Mexico has some blue ones there now. If you do get any, breeding a blue rooster to blue hens can still give you a chance to get some splash chicks.

I have gotten everybody back in their secure coops. I guess no more free ranging for us. I hate racoons!
I hatched 3 eggs from blue parents last year and they were each a different shade of grey. So pretty! I hatched a few more just after Christmas and they're pretty splashy, but there's a hint of buff color from their orpington mama. So they're mixed, but still so pretty! I won't breed them but they'll still have those nice big aussie eggs. And the sweet temper from both parents.

I don't free range mine neither. We have hawks, coyotes, and sometimes loose dogs. I have too much time and money invested in mine to be letting the predators feed on them. I even have a padlock on my walk-in door to the coop, and they have a nice predator-proof run that is attached to the coop.
