Australorps breed Thread

CB and CG,
I have been gone for a week and just got back. Thanks for the comparison pics. Your utility strain does more closely resemble our American strain, however we have increased our size dramatically. I do like the first pic of your blue. With the help of Chet at Hupp Farms I now have a decent bunch to start with next year. Along with my blacks from two different lines that will be kept apart. I have 1-Splash K, 1-Splash P, 2-dark blue K's, 1- Light blue P. The blue gene is a little wonky so I have to decide on the bluXspl cross for 50/50, or the SplXBlk for 100% blue, or just SPlXSpl for 100% Spl. That I will deal with next year. It appears you have the same problems with combs that we have, some good and some terrible. Thanks again for the pics of your chooks.

I use a feed called pullet grower, it is used by turkey breeders as well, I also give some scrambles eggs couple times a week ..make an outside area so they can pick at plants and buggs and they will leave each other alone and keep themselves busy..they are so busy picking at grasses and buggs at this young age to pick on each other other than playing

I have a large temp pen set up for the baies befor they get moved out into a few bigger spaces .. there is one white cockeral out there who has already established that he runs that pullet pen..all of his movements are deliberate ..the 2 young males play fight a bit..the second cockeral has already accepted that he is the lower in the pecking order and lowers his head when approached by the bigger one as a submissive gesture..later on I will separate them once the hormones really kick in
In addition to always having access to the Game Bird Starter I cook them breakfast every morning. They get Scrambled eggs, Quinoa Grain, Yogurt, Sometimes Oatmeal, and always meal worms. I think I have been very well blessed with little boys. There seems to be a majority of them!

Thats the only downfall to breeder birds Dan..you never know how many cockerals will pop out..some how i got lucky..all girls and 1 boy..that never happens for me..usually i get a box of roosters.

Dan,
The Hupp 5 are 3 boys and 2 girls, but I am still happy, happy, happy. As far as them picking on each other it is your fault! You are spoiling those babies and they all want your attention just like our kids. LOL, The more you give them, the more they want. Case in point with my wife and our 7 grandkids!!!

You know what they say though Kurt! Happy Wife! Happy Life! You are right I do spoil them or at least I try.

Lynne, Not too concerned about numbers of roos. Hopefully I can get 3 or 4 pullets out of the 20. I still have Hipps eggs in the bator as well as eggs from the original Tigercreek breeding trio.

Keep your fingers crossed for me Kurt. My success incubating so far has been horrible. I started with 83 eggs in the incubator and at day 14 I was down to 61 by just pulling the clears. They were all either scrambled or unfertile.
