Australorps breed Thread

Yes. The tail should go up 15 to 20%. It is one of the reasons that you should wait to breed them until they are older. I know it is expensive to keep a lot of chickens but if you are breeding for SOP, you need to see what they look like when they are full grown. They sometimes show up with faults after the first molt too.

Pick the best three boys and the best 5 or so girls and hold onto them to see what they look like at a year old.

I plan on keeping 6 of my girls and 3 of the boys until next spring.

I was looking at mine today and all of mine either have really curved backs or flat backs and they curve downward toward their tails, not upward. Will just have to work with what I got for now. Thanx you guys!

RoseMarie, on occasion pictures are a valuable thing. When I say curving back, this should not be confused with a high tail, I mean the bowl shape that continuously curves from neck to tail. This is created by 1)neck curve, 2) neck to back, 3) shoulder slope, 4) saddle feathering creating upward curve, 5) tail angle

Hi Rosemarie, I have posted this pic in this thread before but here is a visual representation of one of my Australorps back curve. I think this will compliment cubakid's explanation. She is not perfect but has a reasonable curve. Notice how she has no sharp angles.

Notice the curves in the Front too. They are supposed to be curvy like that in contrast to the HRIR in my Avatar that looks like a Brick. Beautiful Hen!
