Australorps breed Thread

I would have loved to have kept my other roo. He was the really sweet one :hit. As I said, I kept the little one because he had been sick. They we're best buds! My problem was room. At the time I didn't think I had room for any roos that's why I intended to just buy two pullets. I am planning to expand my coop a bit soon so I can give my Max some fine heritage Aussie ladies ;) . As I've said before, I plan to eventually have an all heritage Aussie flock. :D

So I'm a little confused by my Australorp. Let me first say she is a hatchery bird so not up to show quality I'm sure. She is 17 weeks old. And all along people have been telling me she's a pullet. She is the smallest of my flock all the same age. And very little comb development. But today when I took these pictures and then looked at them I saw her tail. Seems very plumey. Is she really a pullet? I'm going to be heart broken if Ebony is a "he" so will pal Luna the Golden Sex Link! My gut says there would be much more comb development but the tail is really throwing me.

I would say pullet, just looks a little odd.
LOL. You can say that again. But I'm glad to hear you say it as she is the sweetest little bird. And as my flock is really for eggs and my own enjoyment I'm happy with her oddness and all!

cockerels have Hackle and saddle feathers. That is a tail feather and both boys and girls have those.

That one will probably fall out soon. She is working on her last juvenile molt.

You have a very nice looking Pullet!

Quote:Hi back chickisoup. Sorry you had such a bad experience re-homing your roo, "big brother" Really remarkable how it worked out however. That puts a smile on it for sure.

Well, I remember because you wrote a very compelling story about your experience with your two roosters awhile back. I was touched by how much care you gave them to give them a fighting chance at survival. I really like his new name by the way. Looking forward to seeing a pic of him now when you can get it done. Sounds like your world will be frozen solid deeply for awhile. Stay warm. Hope you do make that trip to the Urch chicken ranch. Would love to hear all about it. I know others would too. When I contacted Urch last year he had a minimum of 25 which I cannot deal with or I would have ordered from him. ~Dee~
this is my Max playing in the top of the greenhouse.

This is my Max. What do you all think??? He has no white feathers in lower pic, it's just the light bouncing off those shiny feathers. Now, keep in mind he had a very rough start to life and is a bit of a late bloomer, his wattles and comb are just really starting to develop. He turned 6 months old this week and just starting to really take off and gaining weight so fast now you can almost watch him grow!!! He actually ate Kale out of my hand today but then puffed up and thought about challenging me when one of the girls squawked when I picked her up. Silly boy. As much as I cherish him, I'm still top roo in this coop!

He sure is looking good. LOL yeah one of my RIR's roos came running at me from behind and pecked me on the back of my foot but I had on socks and long pants so it didn't cut the skin. But after that I have really started working him to teach him WHO he is and WHO I am so he knows to stay back away from me. So far so good. I had already started doing that BUT had gotten slack about it and you can't get slack cuz they forget.
